My Recycle Bin is reporting that there is something in it, (By the icon on my Desktop) but when I click on it to open the Recycle Bin, the Recycle Bin is empty. Yet, when I right click on the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop and click on "Empty Recycle Bin" this Dialog Box appears. (Pic below) I even got bold on day and clicked on 'yes', but nothing happened, the situation remains the same. I have not tried to delete WINDOWS in any way, shape or form at all. I have no idea how it even got in there.  (I'm still not sure if it really is in there. Like I said, when I click on it to open the Recycle Bin, it is empty.) It's like a ghost and I'm chasing it's tail.

Any suggestions on how to sever this tail?

another thread I found:

Second reply seems to explain one reason this happens.

ok- I searched for "WIN98" and the only thing it could find was 4 data files - (Pic Below) So I don't think I'm running two OS on this puter. I did, at one time, run "Window 98" on a different puter, (That was my old 486 DX puter) but not on this one. This puter has always been a Windows XP OS since conception.

other suggestions:

reboot. (if you haven't already, seems this resolves the issue for some people).

Make sure you're up to date. a Windows update a few months ago (apparently) fixed this particular issue.

However, you aren't using the "standard" recycle bin; see if you can disable the norton tool that seems to be taking it over, then try emptying it.

Occasionally, this happens on my Win98SE machine.  I just ignore it.  Use CCleaner to empty Recycle Bin, etc.

Although I don't want to start a new thread, (or maybe I should, just for this specific problem) I am trying to get "KB981349" update to load on this puter (as BC_P suggested) but I keep getting this error (pic below) and it halts the install.

I did a search for the "wuauclt.exe" (which "KB981349" is looking for when it does the install) and I have 4 files that the search found. (I will post the pic in the next post.) Should I simply delete these files and let the KB981349 update re-install them? Will that leave orphaned pointers in the Registry data file? Which very well could be the situation as it is.

ok - I got this "Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer v2.2" up and running and this is what it came back with.

Now, do you think I really need to install all these updates? I don't even use I.E. at all.

I'm not sure I can even trust this "Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer v2.2"

See under the heading of "Windows Version" - I can tell you that this puter is running "Windows-XP Home" exclusively.  I'm going blind here my friends...
