Can't help you except this suggestion:
Install Ubuntu. This will prove wheter or not a hardware issue is bugging you down.
Also, Ubuntu will rewrite your hard drive, master boot record and all that jazz.
Once you know that everything is OK, try reinstalling vista.
Do not bother with the dual boot. This is more headache than anything else in your situation.
