Windows 7 SP1 RTM is now available for everyone to download.
  Microsoft posted its final build of Windows 7 SP1 to the Microsoft Download Center on Tuesday.
  The public release follows a private release to MSDN and TechNet   customers last week. Copies of Microsoft’s Windows 7 SP1 RTM update   leaked last month to file sharing websites ahead of its release.   Microsoft has confirmed 7601.17514.101119-1850 is the final RTM. The   software giant is expected to release the final bits to Windows Update   shortly.

I went to the link posted by Allan and clicked on the download link near the bottom of that page.  It reads Windows SP1 ISO download (x86 and x64) – Microsoft download center.

I just noticed that a few minutes ago. Still wonder why it's so much larger. I want to say maybe the smaller ones are web installers.

the ISO probably is the "offline" type installer; whereas the smaller ones are web installers that will reach out to the web to get some of the hotfixes/updates. This is because the "web" installers are more or less designed for computers that are already running windows 7 and have been running it for a while, since they will likely already have a good portion of the updates the offline ISO has, thanks to windows update. (And if they don't then it reaches out and grabs them)

I downloaded from both the site in the link above AND directly from MS - both are 1.9 Gb. The MS is an .img file (just change the name to .iso and burn)

BTW, the one file contains sp's for 32 AND 64 bit OS's

The smaller versions (the executable installers) are architecture specific (one for x86 and one for x64); the ISO will have both architectures, so that is ~1.8GB.

Installation took about 30 minutes on the first desktop system. After burning the .iso to dvd, you will run the installer from within the OS.

I just re-read the title of this thread and noticed that it says windows 7 and thought how off topic my post must seem. But SP1 was also released for server 08 r2 today. I've been following that release more than the win7 release.

The SP1 download file at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=c3202ce6-4056-4059-8a1b-3a9b77cdfdda#Overview is for both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008.  Perhaps that's a factor is it being such large file.

It has appeared in Windows Updates. I am going to do an image backup and then wait a day or two to see if there are going to be anything that will impact my current set up. I have memories of XP Service Packs 1 2 & 3.
