I thought SP3 went pretty smooth..... did it not?

Only a few little things. In XP I had done various hacks like a custom uxtheme.dll to allow unofficial themes, modified RWIN, MTU, patched tcp/ip and a few other things and each service pack set them all back to Windows defaults so now I like to do my homework and not be the first to leap.

Well, I had to revert to the image I created before installing the SP. It appears I'm going to be one of the few exceptions who cannot update. Shortly after rebooting I noticed one program didn't work. First it reported it could not find \system32\olepro32.dll. I copied that file from another system and then it said it couldn't find vbscript.dll. Copied that also and the program worked, but then some of my desktop shortcuts said they couldn't find the program to which they were assigned. I went directly to the program files and tried to run the program .exe files, and they also said they could not find the program! Never saw that before, but okay.

Bottom line, I had to restore to the pre-sp state. Tried both the stand-alone .iso AND the Windows Update push. Oddly enough, the latter broke the system as it was downloading. Got to about 35% downloaded and I noticed those two .dll file were again no longer in my \system32 folder.

My W7 home installation was an upgrade over a Vista installation, so I'm guessing that has something to do with the issue. Anyway, it appears I won't be installing sp1 for now.

It might not be a bad idea to hold off for a while before installing SP1 - as has been the case with most major updates from Microsoft, there may be a few bugs/glitches that must be ironed out.

I, for one, am going to wait a few weeks, check the TechNets, make sure this is in fact a final release. I'm certainly not going to install the service pack on any clients' machines until I'm sure everything's kosher.

Having made an image, I decided to bite the bullet... I know curiosity killed the cat, but I can always roll back if I don't like it. I gather that if you have been getting Windows Updates regularly the amount of download required will be smaller than the full RTM size, and as far as I know I have every "important" update. The download size in fact is 87.5 MB and it is 95% complete as I type this. I look again... download complete, update installing. The progress bar is at about 75%. More later.

Already seeing minor problems popping up in other forums, such as:

1. The SP1 install wipes out all previous Restore Points except for the RP immediately prior to the SP install.

2. Permissions issues: apparently, it's best to install SP1 as an admin (of course) and with no other non-admin users logged on.

3. Low disk space errors.

4. Various sundry antivirus problems.

All in all, looks like a mostly smooth update, but there's no way that the MS testers could have anticipated every real world situation.

Just a head's up.

1. I disable system restore anyway so this one won't bother me.
2. Installed SP1 as ordinary user; no problems seen so far.
3. 100 GB Windows partition had about 60 GB free, it still has about 60 GB free.
4. Running MSE, no problems seen.

Agreed - most of what I've seen are minor, common sense-type glitches.

Just saw another one: user was "complaining" that all of her pending Windows Updates had disappeared. This is logical: SP1 would have removed the old updates as they were made redundant by the new SP, which should contain a roll-up of all the previous critical updates anyway.

Also, from what I've read, users are having problem with the .iso download (usually with the burning to DVD process - most Microsoft .isos must be burned at a really slow speed) - might be best to recommend the .exe.

It appeared in my Windows Updates on 2/26/11 and I installed it.  No glitches noticed so far.
