Wireless speed hopping 2.0 full version
    « on: March 08, 2011, 03:22:53 PM »
    First time Computer Hope user;

I have this situation, I will begin at ... the beginning.

We had a wireless router, a D-link.  We were having problems, it was old, and we trashed it.

I then got a Linksys router (Model WRT54G2 v1.5) It is wireless G
We are running DSL and coming through a speedstream modem

Problem: We have three laptops, a X-box, and a Wii. All wireless connection.

When using my laptop, a Vostro Dell , N- card, it is semi functional- AND N IS BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE .  The normal connection would be 52mbps ( On the Vostro I get 48 mbps, and will fluctuate) Example, (54, 48, 24, 11, 2, 1) are all the different ones I will get.  Mine will hold more steady, but the other two laptops will fluctuate more wildly.

    List 1.1
Average                Fluctuation                     SP              Network Type             Age in years
    Vastro:        48                            24-52    mbps        XP sp 3                 N                         3
    Toshiba:       11                            1- 52     mbps       XP  sp 3                G                         6
    Dell:             11                            1-52      mbps       XP  sp 3                G                         7

The Wii and X-box run fine and we play online and run Netflix without losing connection.
Even with one computer on, sitting right next to the router it will still have the same problems.
So it is not the bandwidth.

I ran several speed tests, and received
    a ping of 78
a download speed of 1.20    mbps
and a upload speed of 0.32  mbps

Averaged between all the computers. Furthermore, we had this problem for months!

    Please Help Me
    and thank you

      What did you expect?
      That is very typical.
With DSL you seldom will get speeds above 1.5 mega bits per second.
Your Wireless devices are doing 10 mega bps or better. Far above what is needed to follow.
The piratical range of  indoor wireless is about 30 feet more or less.

Well, I would rather leave the bias of networks out of this, don't just say It is DSL (but please still take it into account)... not that I am being agrassive or anything.

I know my Parents house use the same exact router and the same DSL... (SAME PLAN) and there connection can hold Two desktops, multiple laptops, and multiple x-box systems at the same time. All running at 52 mbps! That is not the problem.

That's not true nowadays.  For example, Windstream.net offers DSL speeds up to 12 Mb/s in Newark, Ohio.  See http://compnetworking.about.com/od/dslvscablemodem/ss/broadbandtutor.htm.  Various speeds are available, at different costs, of course.

In my area, where CenturyLink.net is the DSL provider, I recently upgraded my DSL from 1.5 Mb/s to 3 Mb/s.  Their highest speed offering is 10 Mb/s.  See http://www.centurylink.com/Pages/Personal/Internet/index.html

Please don't get off topic, I want to understand why my internet is speed hoping... it is not bandwidth...

Wireless networks can speed hop. This "normal" albeit unwelcome behavior. It is outside the general scope of this forum to explain how this is. It is a communication issue. There is no guarantee that wireless can work reliably. It has been this way from then inception.
          Google for the phrase:
          wireless reliability issues
and get near 1000 hits.  Even if only half of the articles are relevant, there is a real issue with using  802.11 systems. First there was 'a' then 'b' and along came 'g' and last came 'n' and.. wait they skip  all the way to nearly the end of the alphabet and still have not a real solution.

And, what does "Wireless speed hopping 2.0 full version" mean?  As far as I know, there is no software called speed hopper or speed hopping.  So, what the heck does "2.0 full version" mean?

Sorry as I said This is my first time ... here are more details...
There is another thread that I made without me being aware,

I also know that wireless can be unreliable, but I have worked wireless systems and never seen this reaction...

So I am going to simplify this

                1. There are multiple wireless systems

                2. On the multiple wireless systems, we have the speed jump all the way to 1 mbps

                3. Not bandwidth, tried with no other systems on other than the control.

                4. Not range placed next to router

                5. Using DSL... NOT DSL's FAULT

                6. Laptop's have internal cars, all G, and N

                7. Able to bring laptops to a different wireless network, much faster.

                8. Able to bring other laptops to this network, they work here better

                9. X-box, and Wii, run perfectly fine on this network.

P.S. I tried to delete earlier post could not, so "wireless hopping 2.0 full version"  means the second thread, and also means my internet speed is hopping.

Thanks again for everyone that is trying to solve my issue, any other questions, I check at least twice a day.

So what's the problem?  Your broadband (DSL) speed, or your internal (LAN) speed?

Xbox and Wii don't really need all that much bandwidth to work without you noticing a problem, trust me, I've got 1st hand experience of this.

                  Now, again:

                  What is the problem?

Okay lets take x-box and Wii out of the mix... even though I stream netflix from both...
All the laptops I use drop connection to 1 mbps and sometimes stay there; that is the problem.

Also I am now visiting my parents, using there internet with the same type of router, on AT&T dsl... the same plan and I am getting 54 mbps with great connection.  Furthermore I am more the 50 feet from the router 4 rooms away.

                      getting 54 mbps

How are you getting this figure?  What tool are you using to determine your speed?

are you moving around with the laptops when their connection speed(s) change? are there microwaves, old cellphones or cordless phones in use? Have you tried changing the channel of the router itself from the default?

maximum range of standard Wireless-G is about 125feet or so; I don't see how you can get the full 54mbps at half that distance.

Either way, your laptops are not "speed-hopping" in any way. That speed indication (I assume you are using the tooltip from the network icon in the notification area or something similar) is merely a estimate made by the computer based on your Signal strength. Your problem is a intermittent signal to noise ratio. I've encountered similar problems and they were always fixed by simply changing the channel of the router from the default.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

The connection speed located under the wireless network connection on the general tab.  Right under duration.  I am NOT talking about the ping speed on an internet speed test.  That is about 1 to 2mbps, on both download and upload.  (That is normal...)  but it is slower than that, like .5 mbps...

Thank you BC_programmer, first solution of this forum, but I have changed the channel to 11 and 1... and every other one lol.

I see no difference, and have rebooted the other laptops.
