KERNEL32.dll Missing???
« on: May 05, 2011, 09:47:09 PM »
1st of all I will admit that I have little to no knowledge of the "inner workings" of a computer!

I have an old, old laptop (Dell Latitude C610) that was given to me.  I read on the internet that the laptop was capable of being "wireless"...Thus problems began...

I ordered a wireless card from a vendor on "Amazon.com".  Description - "Intel PRO/Wireless 2200 - Network adapter - Mini PCI - 802.11b, 802.11g.

Tried to install and think I learned I needed drivers for the software.  Called Dell and Intel for help but neither "supported the software".  Contacted the vendor from Amazon.com and they sent me numerous files to try to get the laptop wireless.

AND - that is when the problems REALLY started!!!

Now I am getting this error on the laptop (and by the way - still no wireless network!!!)

"The procedure entry point WTSGetActiveConsoleId could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll"!!

Is there any help for this???

All replys are appreciated!!!

Here is the best advice I can give you. This is the same as I would say to my close friends. Attempting to improve or maintain an older computer with Windows 2000 is not a good use of your time. I have a Windows 2000 laptop here that works fine, but I no longer have any interest in doing any improvements on it. If it started to have problems, I would just set it aside.
You can get a good quality refurbished dell laptop for about $200 or less and it with have Windows XP.  The old computer you might sell and recover part of the cost.

If you want to get a refurbished Dell laptop with Windows XP, do a Google search on:
Refurbished Dell Laptop

The best choice of wireless adapter is often a USB device. These are in high demand and work on many computers, so the cost goes down and the quality is good. But any specialized wireless devices for older models tend to be overpriced because of low turnover.

That is the best advice I can offer for anybody with limited experience. I have had better results buying a newer refurbished computer rather that doing maintenance on my older clunkers. And I have years of experience st this thing.

Otherwise, you have to remove the drivers you installed. They may not be suitable for Windows 2000. which had a major update two or three years ago. It is no longer supported.

Sorry for posting in the old topic but i had similar problems...

When it comes to kernel32.dll i suggest you to just reinstall the windows, put xp up and remove all the necessary things that would slow down your computer.

Or there is another solution tho i dont suggest it is to go to dll files website and download kernel32.dll or read about it and see if your problem is solvable ;)

P.S. this is my 1st post. I hope it was helpful :D
Cheers

I plead ignorance. Checking with the MS knowledge Base, there are updates after nSP4 for Windows 2000. One of these is a security update for kernel32.dll which may have something to do with the problem the OP reported.

I had to do some work on an old laptop and can not upgrade it to Windows XP. So I have ton eat my own words. Some old computers never die, but they don't work well on XP. Hope the link above gives some clue.
