BOOT DISK FAILURE...Windows 2000
« on: August 16, 2005, 04:44:06 PM »
My Win 2k will not boot and I did not create a boot disk during the install.

I get a msg : "Boot disk failure, insert system disk and hit enter."

I do not know how to boot to a command prompt, please provides tips on this as well

Is there any hope in retrieving my data from that harddive.?
Is this a sign of completely trashed harddrive. ?

Rshaikh:

Did you check the floppy disk drive for a diskette?  If there is one in the drive, remove it and reboot.

Doc

Yes, no floppy in drive...... but boot disk failures are not related to this.  it is a corupted sector I believe.

If you are confident sectors are bad, replace the Hard Disk Drive.

Have you tried a repair reinstall of the OS? I can't remember if 2000 has a recovery console, you can rebuild the boot sector easily off windows XP.

Raptor...no I am NOT sure if sectors are bad...reason being the h/d does boot up once in a while say like once in every 20-25 attempts.

Once boots up then after a while it goes into a self reboot and ends up at BOOT DISK FAILURE msg.

Once it came up and I tried to run a disk defrag, which took a good 12 hrs on a 80Gb h/d then it reboot itself. It started to do a chkdsk and failed again.

I do not know how to boot the sys to a DOS mode, where I can run a chkdsk on it.
..waiting on more suggestions!

Try downloading diagnostic software from the HDD manufacturer and use it as a bootable diskette to test the HDD.
