computer start up problem

My ibm compatible wont start up,  the fans on the cpu and power supply work,  disc drives lite up momentarily, but no beeps at all  i think it is an AMI bios,  if that is correct.  anyway i was wondering if maybe the battery on the motherboard can be to blame.  It seem to start acting funny with the mouse no working.  I have tried booting it with nothing attached, ie removed hard drive cable and mouse and keyboard, but no beeps.  thanks in advance for the help, Rick

nothing at all, monitor stays black and then shifts to standby mode

Try resetting the BIOS

To reset the BIOS, take the following steps:

1. Power down computer
2. Take countermeasures against electro-static discharge
3. Remove computer casing
4. Inspect mainboard for a CMOS jump switch or CMOS battery

In case of CMOS jump switch:

Follow instructions provided with the mainboard manual.

In case of CMOS battery:

I. Remove CMOS battery for approximately 10-15 seconds.
II. After 10-15 seconds, place the CMOS battery back.

5. Power on system.

Do not power on the system when CMOS jumper is set to clear_cmos or when CMOS battery is non-present.

Why did you suspect the BIOS battery? Have you overclocked or changed system settings?

no I havent changed anything in terms of system settings.   I was just guessing on the battery and wondering if it were dead, would that not allow the computer to boot up.   I have about 18 months ago replaced the motherboard, and about 9 months ago the powersupply.   I guess i was just hoping for an easy fix by just replacing a battery,  I tried with two others i had lying around, but i do not how well they are either.  I will try removing it,  replacing it and starting it, up again

ok tried removing the battery waiting a few minutes and replacing it,  still nothing

Try reseating all the hardware and reconnecting all cables.

Have you got another stick of Ram you could try. Or if you have 2 sticks take one out leave one in.
