Computer freezes as soon as connected to internet
    « on: July 07, 2011, 05:02:43 PM »
Hi there, i know its not the first post regarding such problem, and i've read a couple of such threads here as well but what i got is a different problem.

    here it is
years back i started to have problem with my laptop it began to freeze randomly, then i figured it was the wi-fi , which was doing it , couldn't find a solution
to the problem back then so disabled wi-fi and sent the laptop to my office workers who never need to use internet.

a few days back i brought it back home as i bought a new one for office
Now, using USB dongle to connect to the internet it worked fine for 2 days(os xp sp2), but after that it started freezing like earlier.
I was using xp sp2, on my machine, now , installed a clean copy of windows 7 , installed the usb data card driver and started the internet and it freezes the whole comp still.

Interesting thing is , my laptop hangs even at windows startup screen while the usb data card is plugged in, now this is really really strange.
This was the case with the wi-fi too, so i never installed the driver for the wi-fi again.
And still it'll sometimes work for like 2-20 minutes other times it'll hang as soon as i click connect.
Nothing works so have to use hard reset button everytime.
I've tested usb ports thoroughly its surely not a problem with the usb ports.

Its not like i m a noob with computers and internet, but couldn't figure out the problem this time. Please help guys^^

    Zenith laptop,
    1.6ghz
    1.25gb ram

    My tries :
OS tried xp sp2, windows 7
Try safe mode also in both os versions
Disk Defrag, disk cleanup, cookie cleanup
    event viewer is empty
memory doesnt get to 100% either, i had task manager running all the time and cpu never reached 100%
disk space couldnt be a problem over 25gb free on system drive
all the drivers are fully updated to my knowledge and to drivermax software results
installed norton 360 fully updated and fully scanned without 0 errors/virus

I BELIVE ITS A HARDWARE PROBLEM SO POSTED IT HERE

What other protections softwares have you installed ? Do you use Performance options default such as Paging Files, Processing scheduling and Memory usage for programs? Certain freezing could also be that RAM modules gold contacts are dirty thus unable to communicate well with CPU.

Have you installed all of the chipset drivers for the laptop?

Your system may not handle win 7 completely; however, is you installed starter version you should be fine.  When loading internet explorer with win 7 usually it looks like it takes  a while to open the explorer but that is normal.  I would recommend you to reinstall your windows (clean), do not plug your internet cable.  INstall an antivirus after you install your windows i personally recommend (free) AVAST or (if you rather pay) go for Bit Defender thats a good one.  Try reducing the graphic options in your system configuration for better performance.

I've not been using any driver service until recently, in view for a solution to the freezing problem, i installed and checked the drivermax agent and updated fully all the drivers

          Serune:
Yes, its a bit too much for my system configuration, having windows 7 home starter i mean, but its working fine other than same freezing problem.

          Quantos:
yes i've installed all the chipset drivers.

BTW, how come system hangs at windows startup screen while usb data card is plugged in?
none of the external program starts until windows is off the startup screen, so i guess no driver or external program conflicting with the system.

And by startup screen, i mean, the screen with windows logo animating to get started.

Just as a heads up, stay away from those things, just because a driver is newer doesn't mean it's the right thing to do.  As long as you aren't having a problem with a driver there is no sense in updating one.  Besides they charge for the service(which is usually wrong), but drivers are FREE for the having, why pay somebody for them.

When i bought it in 2001/02 , it had 256mb of ram only , years after a puchased and installed an additional 1gb ram of similar type, could that be causing this problem?

Your first post mentioned USB wireless adapter. Are they the same? Do you have other firewalls installed and have you tried removing Norton and using other free antivirus?

i don't think there is any issue with the memory? It seems more a Hard drive problem to me or Operating system is missing some important file...did you try windows re-installation.
