compaq presario sr1300nx- error code 4

Compaq Presario sr1300nx with windows xp.  Packed away for six months.  Tried to start up again, and got nothing but <windows root>\ system 321\ hal.dll.
error code 4.  Trying to reinstall windows xp, but all I get is" insert recovery floppy disc" & " corrupt file".  I don't have a recovery disc, does this model even take a floppy disc? Computer worked fine before I packed it away. All I did was pull some photos and data files off on a zip drive.  Also tried safe mode and got the same results.

Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard Disk. Boot the XP CD and, instead of Setup, take the immediate R for Repair.
