did the drive work before you updated your computer to windows 7? does the external drive work on other computers, like a laptop or something?

What kind of files?  Not your installed programs?

no, just general files such as pictures, documents etc.

I assume the Maxtor 3200 is an external USB drive?
You are not able to copy & paste the folders from one drive to the other?
I just did the same with mine with no problems, i.e., it has nothing to do with Win7.

no the maxtor 3200 is an external hard drive. the computer does not recognise the device when it is plugged in to the computer

            What do you mean, "no"?
The Maxtor 3200 is an external USB hard drive.

The AC power adapter is probably bad.  Try a different one.

Would a problem of this nature arise if the files (on the external) were created in a fat32 format and now are trying to be transfered to a NTFS file system? truenorth

No.  My 320GB external is FAT32, laptop is Win7-64bit NTFS.

                NTFS reads FAT32 fine...
                FAT32 does not recognise NTFS...

That is a puzzling remark - I have absolutely no idea what it means.

No. The only problem that might arise is that you cannot create a file larger than (2^32)-1 bytes (this is one byte less than 4 GB) on a FAT32 partition, thus an attempt to copy or move a file larger than this would fail, but we are talking about files going the other way.

The problem, as expressed by the OP, is this:
