    Windows 95 boot error
    « on: August 25, 2009, 03:30:03 PM »
I get an error of insufficiant memory and try unloading programs and something about Config.sys and Autoexe.bat. I pulled the hard drive from it's original PC (circca 1997, memory 64Mb?) and put it in a gateway 4000 with 1.25Gb memory (2002) just for fun, and I get the opening screen of Windows 95 then the error. The hard drive is a woppin 1.6Gig Maxtor :o. Anyhow if anybody can figure this out, you get no prize but my thanks.

Hmm...I am not very experienced with Win95, but my best bet would be for you to upload the autoexec.bat and config.sys files here, as well as the MEM output.

What I want you to do is boot the Windows 95 to MS-DOS, insert a blank floppy disk (or a writable boot disk made from Windows XP), and type the following commands:

      COPY C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT A:\AUTOEXEC.TXT
      COPY C:\CONFIG.SYS A:\CONFIG.TXT
      MEM /DEBUG > A:\MEM.TXT

Make sure you type the commands exactly as shown, although you can use mixed case. Then, upload those 3 files on the floppy here to ComputerHope. I can continue diagnosis from there.

Their post implies that the computer has problems on the old computer. Then, they tried all that RAM out to see if it would work, and it didn't.

Without the autoexec and config files we may never know...

Would it be too mush ram? That was my first thought, or the drivers conflicting with each other. I'll get back with the file for analysis. Thanks!
