Extracting subtitles from MKV, file is 0 bytes
« on: September 03, 2011, 08:42:24 PM »
This is complicated, please bear with me.

I am extracting the subtitle file from a MKV file type using MKVextractGUI, and when it extracts the subtitle file it is empty (0 bytes) but when I play the MKV file I can turn on/off the subtitles, so I know they are not hard encoded.

It should be stated that when I try to extract the video/audio all I get is an unplayable .h246 file which I have learned is an encoding for MPEG-4 files.

Also I have both AegiSub and SubStation Alpha to read and alter the subtitle file.

Is there any way to de-encode the file to extract the subtitles?

There is multiple errors in the subtitle files, so I want to extract the file, and fix them. Thank you for any assistance.

maybe this: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MKVcleaver

i don't know what your level of experience is with comps,  but i would also try to open the file with hex edit to see if the text is just right there.

Thank you, the MKVcleaver did not work (still 0 bytes) but a friend who is more experienced with computers extracted the information some how (probably by doing what you said)

Thank you very much.
