Just got infected by a strange virus
    « on: September 25, 2011, 11:57:17 PM »
First of all, my computer started dumping physical memory. It restarted, and then said BOOTMGR is missing, insert a disc. I sticked Windows 7 Professional Upgrade disc in -> clicked on repair computer -> startup repair, also used system restore. Both of them were successful.

When I was in Windows, around a minute or so whatever program I was using included Microsoft Security Essentials would say "Stop responding" and the hourglass would show up eternally although I could still move my mouse around. I tried to do the same thing over 10 times and gave me the same response, and there are still some files I want to e-mail to myself. (For some odd reason, my computer cannot detect my USB hard drive, please help as well)

I went into the chat to ask for help, patio told me to download Kaspersky so I could scan my computer at boot time. At boot time, I could do a full scan no problem but all it did was a full scan and did not tell me if I got a virus or not. I got back into Windows, and it still gave me the same problem.

I went into the chat again and got help from Lisa. She asked me if I encountered the same problem in safe mode, and the answer is yes. She said "it seems either the virus is filling up all the memory which seems strange or the computer is running very short of memory. There maybe fault memory not a virus" She suggested memtest, I downloaded memtest86 and ran it. It said no error, but the computer still gave me the same problem.

Here is a list of specs of my computer:
Friend built it for me, Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
    Asus P8Z68-V PRO Motherboard
    Intel Core i5 2500K 3.3GHz 6MB
    G.SKILL 8GB RipjawX 12800CL9 2x4GB Kit
Asus 24x DVDRW LightScribe BK OEM
    Asus Radeon EAH6850 DC 1GB GDDR5
    Seagate 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6GB/s
    OCZ Vertex 2 2.5" 80GB SATAII

There should be more than enough RAM to run programs in Windows..please help me to fix it. Thank you!

Like right now I'm running an update on Windows Defender, I can see the bar is flashing but it is so slow that I cannot tell if it's moving or not. But the Time elapsed is still adding up.

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

      1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
      2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
      3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
      4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
      5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
      6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
      7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.
