Yahoo mail
« on: September 30, 2011, 12:15:08 PM »
Hi All,
My friend uses yahoo mail and wants to know if there is a way to close the adds that run down the right side of the screen. He can click on them to read some mail but as soon as he goes to another screen they come right back which he then has to click on them and they go away again. Is there a way to rid of them?

I don't use yahoo mail so I am no help.

Thanks

No.  But, why is it an issue?  The ad on the right side of the page does not take up a lot of space.  Is your friend using a small monitor or have their resolution set very low?

Then, you're abnormal.  I believe an ad on the right side of the page is normal, as shown below:

If you have no ad on the right side of your page when viewing Yahoo! Mail, then are you using an ad-blocker add-on for your browser?  What browser are you using?

These are taken from my old account of Ymail Classic on a Win XP system , IE8, FF 3.6, Ymessenger v.8

These shots are from another yahoo account on my Win 7, IE8, FF 7, Chrome 14 and Ymessenger v.10.

I did not install or used any Webmail Ad Blocker which would be obvious from the images.

Spoiler, ask your friend if he\she has updated their Ymail to the latest version.  I don't get the ads either, using IE8, no add-ons for blocking.

Well, guys, I think I've discovered the answer to this.  It has nothing to do with what browser you're using.  I found http://info.yahoo.com/privacy/us/yahoo/relevantads.html.  There, if I click on the button titled Manage, that takes me to a page where I can select categories of ads I prefer seeing or completely opt-out of all ads.  If I elect the latter, I get an ad-free mail screen, just as you do.

So, apparently, you've opted out at some point.  I believe the opt-out can be put into effect when first creating a new Yahoo! email account based on choices you make during your initial registration.  So, if you don't recall ever opting out after creating your email account, you probably made choices when creating your account which resulted in opting out of all ads.

Good catch, soybean.  My Yahoo Mail account is over eleven years old so I don't really remember which options were originally chosen.  Must be a case of CRS! :)

I  don't think that really matter that much, that's actually an Online add that has been sponsored by Yahoo itself where you are actually running your mail,  eventually that's part of the whole application of Yahoo site, just don't matter that much so that you won't be ****** off by that. What's important is you were able to  use  the mail application properly. Just sayin:)))
