    Actual Amount Of Storage
    « on: February 22, 2012, 10:49:49 AM »
On my current computer I have 2 drives:
    (1) 320GB (actually says 298GB total free)
    (2) 200GB (actually says 186GB total free)
That gives me a total of 484GB
If I get a computer with a 1TB hard drive how much space will actually have free????

Drive manufacturers measure Gigabytes as 1,000,000,000 bytes.

Real people and OSs measure Gigabytes as 1,073,741,824 bytes (1024^3)

The former is therefore about 93% of the latter.

    120GB x .93% = 111GB
    250GB x .93% = 232GB
    300GB x .93% = 279GB
    500GB x .93% = 465GB
    750GB x .93% = 697GB
    1000GB or 1 TB x .93% = 930GB

EDIT: It may be a little less than 930 (about a gig or two) because of the space reserved for storing the file names. That space is called the File Allocation Table (aka FAT).
