« on: February 25, 2012, 12:31:39 PM »
I have a hp pavilon model 6535 running win 98se i have no software with the pc. the following happens when i boot sytem:

following file missing or corrupted
c:\cdrom\oakcdrom.sys
device driver idec000
no valid cdrom device selected
mouse driver version 9.11b

I can do safe mode boot and get to main screen but since i am in safe mode i cannot get to cd driver screen. How do i fix this line 17 problem and get cdrom driver so system will boot up in

A computer of the last century. On a machine of this age, I advise you to check the hard drive for errors. Did you just get it, or have you had it a long time?

You got a really old machine. These came out in 1999. Possibly you can use another computer to download oakcdrom.sys from a website and try replacing the one on the hard drive of the Pavilion 6535, but this is a very old machine and is probably at the end of its life.

Probably be a good idea to post your autoexec.bat and config sys files...

The oakcdrom.sys driver is only needed if you intend to use the CDROM from DOS.  Windows does not need it.

Win98 does...if it's not existing.

The autoexec.bat and the config.sys were files created for MS-DOS and Windows 3.x as an easy solution of loading the files required for various devices as well as the operating system to properly run. These files are required for later revisions of MS-DOS and Windows 3.x to load. Because Microsoft is trying to steer away from MS-DOS, these files are not required for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP, or later operating systems. However, in some cases it may still be necessary for users to edit or configure these files.

Delete the DEVICE= line for OAKCDROM.SYS.
