    CD/DVD drive problems
    « on: March 14, 2012, 02:16:23 PM »
    Hello,
My DVD drive has started acting up.
It reads some CD/DVD's but not others ??

I have tried several, that I know have data on them and it won't read
i.e., the pop up won't come up asking what you want to do with it or
it won't automatically show the drive and files on it, and even if I go to
computer and click on it it doesn't show anything.

I get no errors or anything, when I place a CD/DVD in it it just blinks
for a while, spins for a while but nothing happens, when I try
another one it works fine.... I'ver tested several. Some work some don't.

I run Vista and the drive is  ASUS DRW-1814BLT

I did check for driver updates, but it says the drive is good.

    Any ideas ?

Ok we need a bit more info. Can you confirm that this is a new phenomenon re these disc that you cannot read? In other words previously it could always read these same specific discs. Are these problematic discs home made or commercial? Have you tried these discs on another computer? Have you added or deleted any software (particularly media burning or reading software) coincident to this occurrence? What software program is associated with the reading of these discs? Any other new or unusual occurences on the computer since this began? truenorth

Yes these were readable in the past, one in particular was just yesterday.

Which is when the problem started.
I was copying the files on it, about 130 pdf files, which took a while.
It stalled in the middle of the copy, with about 10 files left, saying it had a problem
        with certain file.
I reloaded the disk and copied 6 more files one by one.

        This is when/how it started.
Now neither this disk or others will read, although others will read.

Most of these, so far, are either cd's that Ive burned in the past or
        others have i.e., not commercial.

Nothing other than that has happend and I haven't disturbed anything
        on the computer, files etc...

Well a few questions i asked remain unanswered. What was the software that you were using to do the "reading' of the disc? Have you the ability to try these discs on another computer? It would help to evaluate the issue if we knew the answer to that. How exactly were you doing this "I was copying the files on it, about 130 pdf files," What exactly does this "copying" imply? The specific disc that you relate to in your last post is a data disc were they all data discs that are giving you the problem? What about ability to handle DVD's and/or commercial video or music discs? truenorth

The hiccups you are seeing may be a result of using the native Windows burning app built in because if an operation is interrupted or cancelled in any way it reverts to the "files waiting to be burned mode" with no prompt or warning at all...
As truenorth stated provide more details on how you are burning and what apps are being used...
Could also be a failing burner...but let's go 1 step at a time before assuming that...
