Crash to Desktop from Game
« on: September 17, 2005, 11:24:47 AM »
I have a 3 or 4 year old emachines computer running windows ME.  My problem is that when I play games, the computer crashes to the desktop.  The weird thing is, this changes the screen resolution to the lowest setting.  The only way I can get to the start menu is to change the res back to normal otherwise the bottom of the screen is cut off.  Also CTRL + ALT + Delete does nothing when this happens.

I am also having problems properly shutting the computer down.  I'm not sure if this is realated in any way but when I select shutdown, the screen goes blank and the pc is frozen.

Thank in advance for the help.

Adam

Eardleya:

Does this happen when you play certain games, or when you play any game?  For example, are you able to play the Windows Me pinball game without this problem arising?  Does it only happen when you play games via the Internet?  Does it happen only when you play 3-D games?

Let us know,

Doc

    Update Windows including directx.
Update video & sound drivers from manufacturers websites.
Check game websites for fixes & patches.
Check game website forums for similar problems.
Concentrate on getting one game working at a time.
Try the game after every change or update you make so you will know what fixed it.

Let us know your progress.  :)

Thank you for the replies.  To answer the question, the games I have a problem with are racing sims, Grand Prix Legends and Grand Prix 4.  I will try new video and sound drivers as you suggested.  Thanks again.  IŽll let you know.

These Hi-Fi games require more of RAM and graphics setting.

Be sure that you have the most updated ones.

Not to miss on the virus scan.
