Well it depends on your opinion,

I use IE because i am pretty adjusted to it.
I don't have to touch the mouse for it, i simply do all my things via shortcuts.

      Other people say Mozilla.

      So ...

Stick with IE because when Firefox has gone you will be back to IE anyway.

Try Opera 8.5 with Voice, a very fast tabbed Browser. It is now free and carries no advertising.

In IE, Tools, IE Options, Advanced, & under "Navigation" Uncheck:

"Activate install on demand" [Other] , and, "Activate install on demand" [Internet Explorer]

I bow to Fed's greater wisdom  ;D, but I would say that Firefox isn't going away anytime soon.

Most of us are partial to IE because that's what we've been forced to cut our teeth on. But IE is more susceptible to viruses and malware than Firefox, and for this reason many users swear by the latter. Plus Firefox has a number of convenient features not currently available with IE. The downside to Firefox is that some sites won't load with it. In addition, as Firefox increases in popularity it will unavoidably become a more desirable target for hackers.

Bottom line: try both. Go with the one you like better.

                  Hi All,
I am really new at this.  I just got Firefox because I had been having issues with how my PC is running.  I have AMD Athlon XP 1700+ (actually my son's).  The issue was we had been running without a firewall.  So the Forum experts at AMD suggested several things (all free) to do to get the system going better, faster, smoother.  Here is what I did.
Firefox, Sygate (firewall), Crap Cleaner, Ad-Aware.  This is just like getting DSL when you have dial up = It's Great!!  I am running the Windows 2000 Professional (someone from work installed it because he said it was better).

But I still have a problem.  It is taking nearly 30 minutes to nearly 3 hours just to get on line.  The PC wont even get to the icons on the desk top sometimes for almost 20 minutes and from there it is taking almost an hour before the log on to the Earthlink Total Access says that you have successfully logged on.  And then it takes another 40 minutes until the log on drops to the task bar.  And when I  click on the icon for the Firefox it says that the page is not found.
What is causing this?  I did uninstall the Firefox because I thought it was that and it did not change anything.
                  Any suggestions??
                  Kitty ???

there are other issues at work, and definitely not related to Firefox. So you have dialup? What is your connect speed? What kind of modem and what are the settings? What other processes are running/ I am definitely not convinced that you are spyware/adware/virus free. What was happening BEFORE all of these problems started.

Boy! You guys always ask these technical things.....?????  I think the speed was 45.?   Modem??  Does this help:
                    windows 2000
                    Service Pack 4
                    AMD  Athlon XP 1700
                    261, 616 KB RAM

Next subject.  Long story short.  Son bought used Computer, 2 days later having problems, "they" said his issue and would be $39.99 for each problem to fix "it was a virus" ("they" said without seeing).  I took the PCU to work (my tech support) re configured and gave back with some advice = get spamware and firewalls.  The internet provider said it had all that.  Well, I guess it wasn't all that, because the BIG ISSUE was we would get pop ups by the HUNDREDS.  So I would contact them and they would tell me to re-install.  Then it was to uninstall and reinstall.  After the 8th time, I think they were beginning to ignore me.  So I found the type of PCU we had and went to their forum.  I did the Firefox change, got crap cleaner (already had Ad-Aware which wasnt working to well, but may have been overloaded.)  Then the system seemed to do a crash but not.  Cant explain.  So I uninstalled the Firefox went back to IE and started over.  Got the crap cleaner and Cleaned.  Then updated the Ad-Aware.  And Finally was able to get the Sygate Firewall on here.  Which keeps giving me notices it blocked stuff, but I dont know if it is something I use or not.  And I reinstalled the Firefox.  Which took about 2 hours this morning before I could actually get online.  BUT...... YIPEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I HAVE NOT AND LETS REPEAT THAT NOT NOT NOT NOT HAD A POP UP!!!!!!!!!  Only the ones now and again from the Sygate that they blocked something.  If I log off and shut down next time I try to get back on the computer.  It will take about a good hour or more just to get the computer to get up and running.

                    Re: IE or Firefox?

It all comes down to personal preference. I've never really used IE, started out with Mosaic years ago and have always used an 'alternate' browser. Presently using Firefox on all three home systems because it works best for me. No spyware, popups, or ads to annoy me as I surf, and I enjoy the tabbed feature.

Others prefer other browsers. No harm in trying more than one and picking the one (or two) that you feel most comfortable with.

                          Use Mozilla Firefox.

Internet Explorer is only good for Windows Updates or ActiveX elements. Which you never need, anyway.

I have most of my clients switch to Firefox. And they like it a lot.

Internet Explorer is only good for Windows Updates...

Actually, you don't even need IE for Windows Updates if your computer is configured for automatic updates.

If you DO go with Firefox, I'd suggest installing the Adblock extension, with the Filterset.G blocklist. I find that works quite well.

I thought Microsoft WAS the inventor of IE.

Not sure what you mean by 'plugin' browser. Firefox is independent of any other software on the computer, and stands on its own as a browser. IE is tied to the Windows OS, which is the main reason IE starts so quickly and Firefox doesn't. If you meant Firefox can be customized by installing plugins (or extensions), I heartily agree. There are a large number of extensions, most of which I have no use for, but they allow you to customize the browser for your own specific preferences.

There are a number of browsers out there that utilize the IE browser engine -- Avant, MyIE, Smart Bro, Phaseout, etc.-- but Microsoft didn't develop them, nor did they even develop the first browser for Windows.

Mosaic (1993), Cello (1993), and Mozilla (1994) all had popular browsers available for Windows before Microsoft came out with IE in 1995.

When I started out on the net, Mosaic was my browser of choice until I switched to Mozilla, then Netscape (basically the same underlying coding, just a name-change), then back to Mozilla, and finally to Firefox. I guess IE has always been relegated to the back-burner on my computer systems, and to be honest, I haven't needed it.

                          Sorry...got sidetracked with a history lesson... :D

Kitty here, thanks for the input from a while ago.  I have been working with some of the tech support on AMD and they got me pretty far.  I did reinstall the Firefox and I like it a lot.

                          I am still in a wee bit of a pickle and not sure where to post.  But I am really computer iliterate and have tons of questions but not sure where to post them.  Any suggestions?  Here are some examples;
                          1) I was getting help with zip files.  And when it did not work I panicked that I had done something wrong so I believe that the support from AMD kind of gave up on me.  So I was trying to go back to review because I may have stumbled along the way in this Computer 101.

If I download a zip file such as regseeker.zip and I am not sure that I opened it properly = do I delete it and start again?  Or is it uninstall?  And how do I know I got it all deleted?  Or can I just download it again?  Extract or unzip mean the same thing right? and when I unzip it does that mean that it is now running?  I am so confused.  I tried to read up on this and I am not sure what I am reading without some one to answer me if I am on the right track.  Do you have just a questions and answers forum?  And is there anyone who has the patience for a newbie to ask some really far out there questions?  (MORE THAN ONCE?)
                          :( :-[ :'(

Try to post just one question at a time in the specific forum for that subject. If you don't know, use Computer Unknown. The more information you give, the more likely you are to get a prompt response by one of the resident experts. this is kind of  a thread hijack (although it is your own thread) as the subject now does not coincide with what you are asking.

                            Nothing like a hearty discussion.

I started using firefox for my quick searches, when I just want to jump online. I have it set to go right to google.

When I sign on to MSN, it is set to use IE, which I never changed. I prefer Firefox, but not enough to argue about.

The only thing I find to be a hassle, is signing on to MSN. It must be a huge program, because it takes forever (in computer time) to load and sign on. ('bout 30 seconds to a minute).
                            :P
