What do you think firmware is?

Copying software might see the CD-ROM as CD-RW. You can not use its copying capabilities without such software, anyway.

Win9x often sees a DVD as a CDROM. Try inserting a DVD disk and see if it will play.

Why do you need new firmware if the drive is working?

Most good copying software is capable of detecting the type of media in the drive. Insert a blank DVD disk, start the copying software, and run the test (if it has one). If the media is properly detected you need not worry about what windows calls it.

i have the same exact drive and i had the same problem ,this wasn't fixed untill erased all the contents of the drive and reinstalled ,your computer system hardware settings must have change, by something you installed, it will always see it as acd rom.but if you notice when you first installedit it  suppose to say dvd-r drive.and only when you insert the media it changes to the symbol or says the name of the cd or cd type.
i have something that may help it will at least help you detect the driver.write me back i'll email you what i have.
i had this a while back so i'm not sure you have this installed/ :)
