Having problems loading pages in all browsers
    « on: December 16, 2012, 02:03:30 PM »
Not sure if this is the right forum.

Over the past week or so I am having problems loading pages. Not every single time, but at least half the time I get "Server not found". I sometimes have to refresh half a dozen times of more to get the page to load, and even the first time usually the style sheets don't load and I have to refresh again. Sometimes they never load. Other times they load on the first try.

This is happening in all browsers but I reinstalled Firefox anyway to no avail. I have checked my bandwidth and it is were it's supposed to be - 10 mbs. I have naturally cleared all cookies, cache, browsing history. I have disabled all my add ons and in fact I rest the entire firefox browser to its original state and started all over with no addons. Still having the same problem.

I run AVG antiviris every day and nothing ever comes up as suspicions.

Could this be a virus? I can't think of anything else.

How do you get into the WWW?
    Are you using:
    1. DSL, also called  ADSL
    2. Cable
    3. Satellite
    4. Fiber Optic
    5 You business WAN

Is some area the DSL service  from great to horrible and varies from one day to the next. As for the others, my personal knowledge is limited.

I do use DSL, CenturyLink to be exact. I've never had any problems in the past and I've had it for 4 years. I have reset the modem a number of times already.

OK. You need to check with them and see if they have been having trouble. Local issues with the local telecom are among the most common "strange" resets. The modem does a forced reset when the line condition deteriorates. The problem may or may not be apparent when listening to voice over the telephone.

In some areas the phone lines are being replaced by the local companies. Thye do this without notice if the outage is very short. In some cases the local telecom might have a tech swap you pair with another, but the other pair has not been swept for DSL service. It happens.

Also, have you added any new devices to your telephone line? Some cordless phones may cause problems.
Have you changed any electrical wiring in your home? Even extension cords?
A DSL modem has to have a ground return through the electrical system. If the ground return opens, additional noise gets on the telephone line.

As a last  resort,  get another modem. But not until you eliminate the other possible issues. My guess is the local Telco is messing up things.

OK. You need to check with them and see if they have been having trouble.

I called the telco and they said there was no disruption in the lines. I'm starting to think that I either have spyware or a virus. I run anitvirus every day (AVG and updated). I run spyware removal every so often, but every time I run it, it never shows that I have any. Could the spyware removal not be working right?

The issue may as Geek has stated be related to your DSL ISP or even as a result of a malicious infection. However not knowing what other browsers you may have tried (as most of your references are to Firefox) i would like you to try Opera and report back your results.truenorth

The browsers I have used are Firefox, IE, Opera, Safari for windows. I have not tried Chrome because it will not boot for some reason.

I found another guy in another forum who had the same problem as me and he said he reinstalled AVG, but I tried that and it didn't work. So I installed another antivirus, Microsoft Security Essentials. I did a full scan and nothing came up.

Well unfortunately it has been shown many time from the experience of other forum members that it remains possible that even after the useage/scan of your virus program and/or malwarebytes that malicious infections can still be present. I would urge you at this point to post your issue on the CH virus/malware forum and the experts there will try to assist you. Unlike the other CH forums only specialist with much knowledge and experience can offer help there. Once started be thorough and patient as the process can be lengthy. good luck, truenorth

                One last shot.  :D
Do you have another PC or laptop that works just fine on your DSL?
If not, Here s an alternative way to test the DSL.

Get one of the recent distros of Linux that run right from the CD.  Such live distros bet into the internet using your Ethernet connection. Some even work with wireless.

The browser in Linux us often Firefox. Or  maybe Opera. Now if you can get a good usable internet connection using Linux, it would mean the DSL if OK and your problem is with Windows.

That has worked for many as a diagnostic tool. I am not saying you have to go to Linux, just use one of the "live" distros to verify your DSL connection.

Look here for a list of the Live Linux CDs

Here is a Larger list of Linux distros
