    Windows Server 2003 Help Please
    « on: March 06, 2013, 05:11:26 PM »

     Hi Guys,
I'm looking for info on how to use Windows Server 2003. I very good with your basic computers, windows issues, etc, but I'm just getting into Windows Server 2003 at the school where I have started working.

Is there a link on Computer Hope or a site that anyone could reccomend where I could learn more about how to use it..? I am using a program called TreeSize Free to help me find where all of my space has gone. Any ideas out there on how to find more space on my server drive...?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Microsofts website has lots of good info, such as the folloing link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838421 however nothing is better than having a book to refer to, so i would suggest buying a MS Server 2003 book which should be pretty cheap since 2003 is at the end of its life with 2008 and newer replacing it.

I have this book that was very helpful back in the day: http://www.amazon.com/Mastering-Windows-Server-2003-Minasi/dp/0782141307/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1362616835&sr=8-13&keywords=ms+server+2003

At Amazon someone is selling one USED for 69 cents + $3.99 shipping. With how heavy this book is, I am thinking they should have had $7 shipping, so they will probably lose out on having the book at this price with such low shipping. Its jam packed with pretty much everything you ever need to know with setting up and supporting Server 2003.

As far as wondering where drive space has gone, you may be chasing your tail with shadowcopy enabled. Shadowcopy is a great feature, but the more data that is protected by it, the more space it consumes by keeping 2nd (hidden from user access ) copies of files that were deleted etc in case you need to perform a data recovery for a user who accidentally deleted their project that they had months of labor into creating etc, as was the case when i supported users with our Server 2003 Enterprise servers.

Thank you so much for your reply. In the short term, is there a comand that I could manually do to get rid of Temp files or browsing histories of all the users...?

      Thanks !

There are a couple of methods to do this, the best method is group policy to set it up to exclude the temp files folder.
