My Build
« on: April 22, 2013, 07:49:56 AM »
I built this PC a while ago but thought I'd make a thread on here as I hadn't already.

The machine was originally built to run Mac OS which I did for a while but it is now running Fedora 18 KDE (My main OS) and Windows 8 Professional as a dual boot.  Some of the parts were carried over from my previous build (Graphics card, HDDs and RAM) which explains why the generations of some of the parts are a bit off.

Specs are:
- Intel Core i7 3770k @ 4.3GHz (Overclocked and Turbo Boosts up to 5.25GHz)
- 8gb DDR3 RAM 1600MHz (G-Skill Ripjaws X)
- NVIDIA GeForce 560ti (ASUS DirectCU II)
- 3x 1tb HDD (2x Seagate 7200rpm, 1x WD Green)
- 120gb OCZ Agility III (Fedora)
- 240gb OCZ Agility III (Windows 8)
- Corsair H60 Liquid Cooler
- Corsair HX650W PSU (650w)
- Corsair 650D case

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask!

This solved the problem where the case's USB 3.0 connectors were designed to plug into the external USB ports, I dismantled the bracket that came with the motherboard, mounted it behind the motherboard tray and now the front USB 3.0 ports connect directly to the motherboard header:

Nicely done...
What MBoard ? ?
Also in the last pic is that USB splitter something that came with the case...or an addon ? ? Nifty solution...

Knew I'd forgotten to list something!  It's a Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H, great board!

The USB thing came with the board as a bracket that mounts in a 3.5" bay to give a pair of front USB 3.0 ports.  I was able to dismantle it and the actual USB part fits nicely behind the board.

Man, those pics are beautiful! What kind of camera did you use?

Also, your cabling behind the board is a bit of a rats nest. :P

Thanks!  It was a Canon 600D with the kit 18-55mm lens.

It is a bit of a mess behind the tray but the cables are really thick so it's tricky to get them to follow the path you want.  At least I can still access the bits that I need!

Good thing about that case is it has tons of room behind the mobo tray, so neat cabling isn't a requirement to get the side panel back on without a bulge.
Nice build though, just a shame about the H60 :P

Yeah, I can never be bothered making all the cables behind the mobo neat, especially when they are so thick they go the way THEY want to!  The H60 seems to work fine since I'm not that highly overclocked and I like the way it keeps everything clear inside (No huge tower).

I was just messing, to each their own :) I'm personally not a fan (pun slightly intended) of closed loop liquid coolers but if it works for you, then good :)

Thought I would update this thread.

As far as the machine goes it is largely the same and still going strong but since the last post I have now removed all the HDDs so the machine is now 100% SSD only.  I have also moved from Fedora 18 as my main OS to Arch Linux which is something I have wanted to do for a while now.

The biggest change is my new monitor setup.  I was previously running a pair of Lenovo ThinkVision L220x (Brilliant monitors) which were 22" and 1920x1200 resolution.  I thought about getting a third monitor as I needed more screen space.  However this would mean replacing my graphics card (as the 560ti can only run 2 monitors) and would obviously take up a lot of space.  So instead I bought a pair of 27" Hazro HZ27WB monitors which run at a massive 2560x1440.

I'm really happy with the monitors - Same panel as used in the Apple Thunderbolt display and 27" Dell Ultrasharp but much cheaper however it seems much better made than those cheaper ones available from Korea over eBay (Fully aluminium casing).  Certainly is going to take some getting used to though!

Excellent choice, those monitors look fantastic!

It took me a while to get used to my PCBank (same panel) coming from a 26" 1920x1200, the extra resolution is a little disconcerting at first.  I see you're not making the mistake so many do, which is to continue running everything full screen - you just end up with acres of white space, it's really not necessary at that resolution so running 2 programs that would've been full screen, e.g. web browser and email, becomes the norm.

Cable management, takes some time depending how neat you want to make it but it's just a matter of putting in the effort :)
Some cases make it easier than others but it's almost always possible to make it nice and tidy.
