PNY 64GB flash drive $17.93
« on: September 17, 2013, 08:52:22 AM »
This deal has expired!

I'm not sure if this is US only or not and it does involve a mail in rebate.

If you have been waiting for a good deal on a large USB flash drive then this is it. This is a low end USB as far as specs are concerned (3 MB/s write, 13 MB/s read). It would be good for keeping large backups in one place. I have a few small PNY flash drives and never had any issues with them.

Was just curious as to what 3MB/s Write Speed would mean for this device that is 64GB... if it were 64GB and not lesser which most are, 64GB comes out to 64000 MB divide that by 3MB/s and you have 21333.333 seconds to fill the drive. Divide that by 60 to make how many minutes it would take and its 355.55 minutes, and divide that once again by 60 for hours and you have a device that takes 5.925 hours to fill to 64GB capacity. ( * Note I didnt do the 1000 to 1024 conversion )

The Read Speed isnt too bad at 13MB/s, but if anyone was wanting to back up to the full capacity of this device, you pretty much will tell it to copy and walk away for the next 6 hours for 64GB.

Not a bad deal, but its not a speedy device in comparison to others that are USB 2.0 and run up to 10MB/s Write and 20MB/s Read.

*Personally if anyone had that much data to store to a flash drive, I would suggest going with the USB 3.0 64GB Flash Drive which is way faster, although it wont be this cheap!

I bought some cheap PNY Flash Drives last Black Friday before Christmas at Staples where they had these PNY Attache 2.0 16GB drives for $6 each with a limit of 4 per customer. I bought 4 of them, and only found 4 of them because the large bin that held them was empty and people forgot to check the shelf with the other USB Flash drives where they had a row of them hanging and I grabbed 4 of them. And while they do work, just like this 64GB, they are much slower than the Kingston and SanDisk brand ones I have for writing information to them. *But they do work!

As a Test for speed difference, I put Linux Mint 13 on a 8GB Kingston Traveler and also on this 16GB PNY and timed how long it took to boot the same computer off of the thumb drives to Linux and the 16GB PNY Attache was almost 2.5x slower than the Kingston 8GB Traveler when using stop watch. BUT it works!!!

In regards to speed, this 3MB/s Write Speed is not the slowest i have ever seen... its about average for cheap flash drives with cheap memory. I have a 1GB MicroCenter that I purchased with CentOS 6 on it years ago for like $4.99 in which I thought I was scoring a 1GB drive cheap when 1GB was BIG...so its years ago...lol.... but in the end I found out that the reason why i got it for like $4.99 when other 1Gb of the time were $20 was because these were SLOWWWWwwww at Writing and not too bad at Reading, so for a Linux OS Boot through USB, this device did pretty well, however dump Linux off of it to use it as a regular 1GB flash drive and surprise its Writing at around 384KB/s and Reading around 4MB/s. So I ended up making this back into a Linux Bootable Flash Device because it is too slow to wait for files to write to, and now its my Live USB Boot Fedora thumb drive.

That is a great price. For a little more money you could buy an old Hard Drive wtih better write speed. But it would not fit in your pocket.  ;D

Laptop Hard Drive would at 2.5" but a little bulky when taking a seat somewhere such as at a management meeting. I know because I had to bring a small external around one day and it fit in my pocket and when i sat down and it was in front right pocket it wasnt very comfortable.  ;D   And during this meeting placing the drive on the table that was bare of everything looked like a kid bringing a toy to a classroom as people looked over to see what it was and I got a look from the speaker when attention was drawn away from him as if "Thanks for disrupting the meeting with a show and tell" when others asked what is it..LOL   ::)  oops!

The biggest flash drive I have right now is a SanDisk Cruzer Facet 32GB and I think it was $24.99 I paid for it. I have only had it for about 4 months. My music collection out grew my 16GB SanDisk Cruzer so I finally needed to get bigger storage. The first time I used it I copied around 12GB from my computer to the Cruzer Facet and it took a little over a few hours. But now anything new is done with a sync program so it only takes a few minutes to add / overwrite or remove files.

These lower end storage devices are more targeted at casual users needing to backup personal files or have a way to carry around documents or school work. They have huge bins of really low priced 2, 4 and 8GB flash drives at Walmart for back to school every year and they always sell out to be replaced with something different looking but with the same specs. There is a consumer demand for cheap flash drives.

It is a really good price. I just hate the mail in rebate part. I probably won't have a need for a 64GB flash drive any time soon. But one day I will. I'm still trying to decide if I should grab this one or wait for the next sale. I would really like to find a deal like this on a 64GB Micro SD. I wouldn't be able to resist that!

It is a really good price. I just hate the mail in rebate part.

I have bought many things through newegg, although I generally avoid the rebates because my mindset is that if they can give you a rebate, why dont they just give it to you right then and there vs having to play this game and make you take the time and postage to mail in the proof of purchase with all supporting documentation and waiting. I have had bad luck with rebates where I bought something say today and the rebate expires in 7 days and I send it in and it is send back stating that it was not submitted in time etc or I never hear back and never see the $5 or $10.

However I did buy two OCZ SSD's a year ago when the price was low for SSD's and got a 60GB and 90GB for like $45 for the 60GB and $55 for the 90GB and on top of that OCZ had a rebate offer through newegg to get $5 off of each of the SSD's so I was going to get $10 back. After about a month surprise in the mail was a $10 prepaid American Express Credit Card. Only problem now was that Subway resturant wouldnt accept american express, tried wal-mart and they also ran it and it came up unable to process through them. I was just about going to throw it away and I figured I'd try Mc Donalds and YAY Mc Donalds accepted it and so the $12 lunch for me and my daughter was now just $2 out of pocket.

I generally such as my last video card purchase paid more to get 50% of the potential savings such as the following to do away with the rebate gamble and collect instantly 1/2 of the mail in rebate potential. As seen below, Video Card Option #1 you can get for $24.99 with the mail in rebate, and Video Card Option #2 you can get for $29.99 and not have to deal with mail in rebates.* BUT Video Card Option #1 is really $34.99 until you see the rebate money and sometimes it never shows up. So you are taking a gamble on the $10 savings. I go with the $29.99 Video Card #2 option which I know I will get at least $5 of the potential for $10, almost like Deal-or-No-Deal the game show in which you have 2 brief cases one has 0 savings and the other has $10 savings and the banker calls and is offering you $5 savings.   ;D

$59.99 Video Card # 1 Regular Price
$39.99 New Eggs Marked down price
$34.99 New Eggs Price with instant $5 rebate
Cost to you is $34.99, but they have a $10 mail in rebate to add to it to get it for $24.99 if you ever get your $10

$59.99 Video Card # 2 Regular Price
$39.99 New Eggs Marked down Price
$29.99 New Eggs Price with instant $10 rebate
( No Mail In Rebate Offer on top of this so $29.99 is the price tag for this)

* I'd rather buy the more expensive card for $5 more since I know I will get at least $5 out of the potential for $10 off and pay $29.99 vs paying $34.99 for the gamble to get it for $24.99 if I actually see the money. * Some rebates are also worded in fine print ( As funds remain available ) so there is a limited allocation of funds to cover the rebates and more rebates handed out than the funds to cover them, so its almost like a check book with $20,000 in it to cover the rebate program for promotion of a product, and the rebates are = checks so each one hits the balance deducting the $10 per purchase or per customer etc, so they can only cover 2000 customer rebates, and all rebates that come in after the 2000 bounce, but they dont tell you it bounces, you just never see the money! And the game they played just like a casino with house advantage, the house advantage increases with the number of products sold that exceed that of the funds to cover the rebates so the merchant gets the extra $5 on it vs youself who tried for $10 off, but if you played the game and settled for 1/2 they get their $5 and you get your $5 vs them getting $10 and you $0

I hate rebates, but OCZ did good in paying out the $10 which even though was in the form of a prepaid credit card that just about no one accepted, at least Mc Donalds took it as $10 to offset my meal and my daughters happy meal.

...my 16GB SanDisk Cruzer...
I have one of those & it is only good for music, pics or video, anything that doesn't change much.  Now, I won't buy anything that writes that slowly, USB 2.0 or 3.0.  I pay very close attention to advertised read & write speeds.  At least, SD cards have a Class rating; but some don't meet rated speed.  I think there's a lot of forgeries out there & it wouldn't surprise me if Newegg buys them unknowingly.  USB drives have no speed ratings, so buyer beware.  Recently, I tried a PQi 8GB USB 3.0 drive & it's very fast.  I can boot live Ubuntu & it's as fast as the hard drive, but does run a lot, reading & writing.  Decided Ubuntu is as bloated as Windows, but it did find all the hardware with no special drivers.

It seems like shopping on the internet would have killed the mail in rebate. The two just don't go together. Besides the fine print it may be an indication that many people just never bother or forget to mail in the information.

I think there's a lot of forgeries out there & it wouldn't surprise me if Newegg buys them unknowingly.
That's true but I have never seen any complaints from Newegg customers about fakes. I pretty much trust them. Now Amazon.com on the other hand is definitely a crap shoot. I always read the reviews and if a seller has a complaint about fakes I find another seller.

It's nearly impossible to spot a fake.  About a week ago, I came across a photo comparison.  Here

I don't know about Amazon, but eBay, definitely stay away from them.  Done mostly OK with Newegg, a DOA motherboard & some really poorly packaged items.

I have noticed that Newegg buys up New Old Stock or manufacturer closeouts, hence the rebates.  I don't mind the closeout w/rebate if it's something that serves my needs.  Studies have shown that rebates are in the vendor's favor since most customers don't bother with them.  They don't even issue checks anymore, it's almost always a debit card.

Another thing about fakes and flash drives/sd cards. They are most likely going to be under the SanDisk name instead of PNY or Kingston. The scammers can get more profit from a fake SanDisk then anything else.

Amazon.com will use the same images and specs for the same product on multiple seller pages so that makes it even easier for the fakes to be distributed.

The micro drive is still out there, but fading into the sunset.
Quote
The microdrive is a very small hard disk drive that has a platter size under an inch. The most common form factor is the CompactFlash Type. The form factor terminology can be confusing because the micro drive is not flash memory. It is a true hard drive with a spinning platter and an actuator arm. The continued decline in the cost of flash memory has significantly the narrowed the price gap between flash memory and hard disk drive technology. ...

Also, there are other devices that one could be used, but price rules.

Nice price, I have a 64GB I picked up for £20 a few months ago which regularly goes on sale at that price.  As pointed out though, 3MB/s write speed is very painful, mine does around 14MB/sec on a large file but I still find that frustratingly slow.  When I have my build up and running I'll be investing in some nice fast USB3 drives, I have one which isn't bad but my temporary laptop doesn't have USB3 so it's only useful on my gf's laptop.
That said, it's a lot of very portable storage for the price, and I'd definitely buy one if I could :) you can never have too many flash drives.

True. But I've learned you can have too many that look identical lol.

SanDisk has come out with some really cool stuff this year. I'm waiting on these to start dropping in price. SanDisk Connect Wireless Flash Drive
As usual I have no real need for one. I just want one. ;)

Hah, all mine are different to avoid that issue ;) need a few more though as I'm finding my older ones, like my 8GB Corsair Voyager from about 2006, to be quite limiting in terms of storage space.

That wireless flash drive seems pretty cool, not a fan of wireless where I can avoid it though.  I think my next purchase will be their fastest USB3 drive, it really is quick!
http://www.legitreviews.com/sandisk-64gb-extreme-usb-3-0-flash-drive-review_1994/3
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/usb-3.0-thumb-drive-review,3477-7.html

Off the top of my head I have a fairly useless unbranded 4GB I got free with something, my Corsair mentioned above which I use for transferring small files between PCs and currently has a Windows 7 installer on it, the slow 64GB I mentioned above which I can't remember the brand, a spare 16GB Sandisk Cruzer which is still in its packaging, a 32GB Integral USB3 drive which I use for transferring larger files, and a very physically small drive in my car for music, think that's a 32GB.  So that's 6 off the top of my head, not many compared to most I'm sure.  I intend to downsize to 3 - my small one in my car, a Sandisk Extreme USB3 one for fast transfers, and a Corsair Voyager GT USB3 or Corsair Survivor USB3 because they're both practically indestructible.  Just need to get some cash together first!

USB drives sure have come a long way though even in my lifetime, I remember buying a 256MB drive, which was really big for the time, must've been about 2003.  Everyone else had some 32MB or 64MB drives so I felt like a boss until it died after about 6 months.  Even in that time, prices had dropped enough for me to replace it with a whopping 512MB drive for the same price.  As I went through school and college, 1GB, 2GB, and eventually 32GB drives became the norm as they hit the sweet spot of pricing.  Nowadays, I can pick up 16GB drives on deals for £5, £10 or just above will buy me a decent 32GB drive, and 64GB drives are regularly on promotion for £20, plus the speeds are absolutely incredible compared to back then.

Patriot Supersonic Magnum is "over-the-top" fast, i.e.
    Up to 250MB/s read
    Up to 160MB/s write
...but cost over $100 for 64GB.

I have the 32GB Supersonic Xpress, not so fast, i.e.
    Up to 80MB/s read
    Up to 10MB/s write
Cost under $30

Also have a couple 3.0 SD card readers, Kingston MobilLite G3 (supports SDXC).  It was a deal at $10.
