no response from scanner

My Canon Mp499 printer is working fine, as is the copier. However, when trying to scan neither the scan button, nor opening the device and printers, right click, start scan, works. There is no message displayed, no activity from the printer at all - just nothing happens.

I have this problem with my HP Deskjet.  After much frustration I found a go around. That is to open the HP soulution center where I find clicks to operate the scanner.
