    Floppy Diskette Seek Failure
    « on: January 10, 2014, 06:44:50 AM »
I have a problem with windows xp desktop which has gone on for 2 years but its more annoying than anything else.  I start up tower which starts as normal then computer beeps and goes to black screen with message 'floppy diskette seek failure' strike the f1 to continue, f2 to run the setup utility.
I strike f1 and it then runs to log in screen which problem is then solved, but why should I have to strike f1 all the time? I have went into the setup and then into boot sequence and tried playing around with the order but it never solves anything.  The only options it gives me are 1. Onboard SATA hard drive 2. Onboard or Usb cd-rom drive the other 3 options (onboard or usb floppy drive, onboard ide hard drive and usb device) are listed as 'not present'.

Any ideas anyone? Thanks in advance

    Welcome to Computer Hope

    1) I moved your question to your own topic. Please don't tag questions on to someone else's thread. Thank you.

    2) Your problem has nothing to do with Windows since it occurs long before the desktop even tries to load.

    3) You need to put your hard drive at the top of the boot order in bios. I don't understand what you mean when you say the hard drive isn't present in bios. If bios doesn't see the hd, you wouldn't be able to boot at all.

Floppy seek at boot can be disabled in the BIOS...then press F10 to "save changes and exit"...

Or he could fix the floppy drive.   8)
At one time the floppy drive was very important. So the BIOS gave attention to the seek issues. The drive is not reliable with a seek error.

Please re-read his Post...he wants the seek dis-abled.

I did read it. Disable seek does not fix the drive. He either has to replace the drive or take a screwdriver and adjust the drive.

I agree to Patio. It can be disabled in the BIOS and / or you can even try with disabling the Floppy Disk controller.

Actually disabling the floppy is absolutely the correct first step - patio is correct. While in the bios, you should then make sure the boot order is then correct (no floppy shown after you disable it, hd at the top).

According to what I understand, the OP wants to get rid of the floppy seek message and let the comp boot without any other messages / errors interrupting. He doesn't seem to be bothered if the floppy drive works or not.

This assumes a drive exists to begin with.

OK, I missed that.  I assumed he had a bad drive.
But who wood build a PC without a floppy drive  and leave  the the seek function on?
BTW: You can also reduce the memory test and some other things. Shortens boot time.

    Hi

If you can access the bios , either by pressing the delete or esc or f10 depends on the bios. and on the first page there is the drive types and sizes . Where the drive A type is toggle thru the options until it says none do this if there is a drive B type as well . Save and then exit the error should be gone.

If you want to use the floppy drive this error is caused because the bios has a drive set but it is either the wrong size like is set to 360k 5 1/4 which has 40 tracks when the drive is a 1.44 which has 96 trks so when the bios seeks the disk it finds it has wrong time between issuing the seek and the drive returning to the track 0 position. Or it can be the rails the head runs on are dry and need to be lightly lubricated with sewing machine oil from a cotton bud.

But these days if you still have  files on floppy disk it would be better to have a usb floppy drive that you can attach when needed.
