    SD cards no longer recognized
    « on: January 21, 2014, 10:21:36 PM »
I had 2 different cards in, and checked their photos. I knew to click on the icon on the bottom, clicked on the device, and then clicked on eject. Now neither card is being recognized in My Computer. I'm afraid to try my 3rd card. I tried restarting the computer, but no change. Are the cards toast? Data lost? How did this happen and what should I do? Probably dumping IE 7 tomm.

No, they just wear out. Mostly from rough handling. I think.

EDIT: Many users report short life of SD cards. This is a big conflict with claims of the manufacturers. They way they tell it, you would have to use the card every day for ten years before it wears out. The high failure s due to poor quality control.

Could be your card reader - it's pretty unlike that both cards would stop working at the same time.
Have you tried the cards in another device?  Another card reader, camera, etc?

Is this an external card reader ? ?
Is it hooked up to a USB hub ? ?

I've seen this cause issues with cards being read...

And, you waited until you saw the Safe to Remove Hardware notification appear before removing the cards, correct?

Why not just put them in your camera and see whether the photos are still there?

    Probably dumping IE 7 tomm.
What does IE 7 have to do with this?

I'm running Windows 7 Home Edition with Service Pack 1. The computer is an HP p6610f. It is an internal reader and I did try rebooting the computer. It's frustrating that it worked to initially read them and then in the same sitting they weren't recognized. At least I was able to put the cards in a laptop and they worked there, so my deer pictures aren't lost. Is there a certain driver I need to install?

No,  it is a hardware issue. Go buy a better card reader.
