windows 7 won't boot from my new HDD
    « on: January 23, 2014, 09:00:59 PM »
    i have a dell inspiron m5010 2009 model

a tech support person fixed this problem for me once but i had to do a system restore which gave me this problem again.

in 2012 i dropped my laptop and had to replace the HDD and load windows from my factory recovery discs. The discs worked until i turned off my laptop and turned it back on at which point wiundows would fail to load because a required device is inaccessible.

it turned out that my computer was still trying to ghost boot from my old harddrive whicvh was no longer in the laptop

so present day after a system restore i am having that problem again and i've already restored it numerous times to try and fix it i also purchased "driver manager" soiftware but i still can't find and change my computers settings to where it will forget i ever had a different hard drive in my computer.

    can anyone help me?

on another note is there a way to retrieve my music pictures and videos that got lost because of the system restore?

Was the replacement hard drive the same size as the original drive?
Also was the laptop booting before you did the factory restore?

If you want o recover the data from the drive, attach the drive to  another computer is a free program called recuva    http://www.piriform.com/recuva that may be able to recover the deleted files.

      Hi

Where when the laptop is starting do you get this error?

If it is when windows is booting it could be fixed with changing the HD access mode in the bios from ACHI to IDE mode.

If not sure how to do this google  dell laptop change achi to ide

my laptop is not ide compatable it just has ata and ahci. ahci being the default

it flashes the dell screen then goes to the error message 00000xd something.

how do i use my computer to take screenshots when i'm not playing a game?

then i coud show whaty is going on with the computer and its hardware ect. maybe someone can see what doesn't look right to fix this. I know for a fact that it is happening becausse my os is trying to load the driver for my old harddrive i just don't know where to locate the driver in  my computer menu and erase it.

          Hi

ATA and ide are the same function just a different name .

Could you try booting with it set to IDE

            Hi

You can restore it as often as you want. I thought you said you had photos you wanted to recover and the more times you write to the drive the less likely the old data will be recoverable.
You should have the drive out of the laptop attached to another computer with recovery software installed, enough space on a drive to put the recovered data to before you keep reloading windows again.
You haven't answered my question as to the reason you were doing the recovery again.

            Thanks

Have you tried the startup repair and system file checker options?

Has the OP used the BIOS to verify the settings?
Does the BIOS indicate anything wrong?

startup repair and system start up dindn't detect any problems because the hard drive that i have is in perfect working order my computer just doesn't know how to boot from it because it still thinks that my old harddrive is in my computer which it is not. How do i delete my old hard drive's driver and reconfigure my system to boot from my new hard drive?

I know that my problem is fixable because a tech support person already fixed it once in november; i'm just not a tech support person to know how to do it myself.

I have already recovered the stuff i lost and put it on a dvd rw on a different note  ;D.

When you image to a new HDD whether using Ghost or any other image app the original drivers are retained...
A method i've used instead of starting over is to run a Repair Install...
              Do you have a Win7 DVD ? ?

no dell doesn't sell their computers with any cds except the unique dell drivers and utilities (already installed on the machiene) i only have the factory image recovery discs which do not have a repair option (i hate dell datasafe backup) but its what i'm stuck with. On another note my computer because it tries to boot my old non existant hard drive refuses to load from the recovery partition and will only restore from the recovery discs.

You now have a problem because you didn't image everything from the original hard drive, i.e. the non-Windows partitions.  I'm not on my Dell now, but all manufacturers do the same thing:  No DVD's.
The image that was created was to reinstall Windows onto the original hard drive only.

Since the product ID is attached to the computer, you don't need Win7 from Dell, it is available as a legit download.  You will need all the Dell drivers for you laptop.

If the repair install doesn't work, you can do a clean install, but you will lose all your stuff.  You will need to tell us what version of Windows you have, i.e Windows 7 Home Premium, 32-bit or 64-bit.

All iso files are here:  http://www.w7forums.com/threads/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-image-downloads.12325/

Hope you know how to burn an iso file to a dvd.  There is a Microsoft tool.
