Adblock Plus filters for Facebook
« on: May 02, 2014, 06:42:49 PM »
I don't use Facebook much but do use it. Facebook has been getting worse and worse about throwing junk in my face that I care nothing about and today Adblock Plus added filters specific to Facebook ads.

There are 3 options.

*Block all Facebook annoyances
*Block only sidebar annoyances
*Block only news feed annoyances

Just go here, scroll down and make your selection. If you don't have Adblock Plus installed you can get it from the official Adblock Plus website.

I use adblock plus myself and have used it to disable some facebook junk. In the adblock plus options you can select "just this page" or something along the same lines so that facebook still functions, but it remembers that next time that same unwanted feature triggers it will be blocked.

I use to play games on facebook, but gave up on them. My biggest complaint is that to have a game full screen its like pulling teeth as for the stupid facebook ad clutter is always trying to intrude on the display space. I found though that right-clicking on the game app you can sometimes get them to run in their own window and then this way you maximize that window and the ads are all gone etc. However the games that FB has I have learned are fun at the beginning and then all of them are designed to progress further you need to have a supporting group of people, and this has given me a distaste for FB games. Some games you just want to solo play and noy have to get 5 friends in on it and then levels down the road you need another 5 people to join etc.

And then... This Just In: AdBlock Plus Still Uses a Lot of Memory

I have been aware of an impact from ABP but didn't realize it's this bad.

AdBlock Plus’s effect on Firefox’s memory usage
Iframe irony: Adblock Plus is probably the reason Firefox and Chrome are such memory hogs

This is a good reminder that add-ons do impact your browser performance. If you have some that you don't use it's best to un-install them.

yeah this is the reason I've stayed away from certain add ons. I'm not too bothered by the ads because I end up just ignoring them. Seriously, if you asked me to say at least one ad that came up during a half hour on facebook, I wouldn't be able to tell you. Either I'm amazing at just ignoring the ads, or my memory is absolutely horrendous.

But i try to keep to a few light add ons to make sure that everything still runs smoothly and I still get to do the things that I want.

It's easy to overlook the fact that most add-ons are actually the same thing as toolbars. They are compacted into a little button but that doesn't mean they have less of an an impact on performance or are any safer than a full toolbar.

I installed adblock plus and now a couple days later I get this weird message from Facebook telling me it wants to scan my PC for malware lol. I have eset so I know I don't have malware. I don't think FB like adblockers stopping them from making money.
