Computer Running Sluggish
« on: November 09, 2005, 01:44:13 PM »
My computer has been running extremly slow lately.  I tried running Microsoft Word and it was going extremely slow and eventually stopped responding.  I tried running my virus scan but that also went very slow and stopped responding.  My Internet Explorer is working fine with no problems.  The only think I can think of is I downloaded Windows XP Service Pack 2 from my University's web site.  Help me please!!

It started going slugish when you installed service pack 2? Or has it happened for a while? Best thing to do is defragment since service pack 2 is huge. Also delete service pack 2 once you download and try increasing your paging file size.

The amount of CPU and RAM you have would greatly be appreciated here.

I am not sure, I didnt notice it right after, not until I starting using Microsoft word.  I am trying to run a virus scan right now and it is hardly responding...

Tyler Hoard......you should let us know ......
Is this a desktop or laptop?
Why did you D/L sp2 from the university site as opposed to the M/S update site ?
How much Ram is installed ?
How large is the hard drive ?
When was the last time you defragged the drive ?
Which cleaning utilities do you have installed ?
Please provide these answers and we can offer a plan of attack.

      Tyler Hoard..........
      D/L Everest ( free) ......http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=1&lang=en

That will tell you everything about your computer.

You should also have the following tools to keep your puter running smoothly .....

Some decent Anti -Virus ( updated of course)

      Ad-Aware SE personel....... http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html

      SpyBot 1.4 ......  http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

      CCleaner ..... http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html

Make sure you get the latest updates for the last 3 once you have them D/L .

You can do a defrag ......using XP ....click on start/all programs / accessories / system tools / then select Disk defragmentor .

Once you have all the tools D/L ...updated and ready to run...... do the following .

      Disconnect from internet .
      Reboot into Safe mode .
      Turn off system restore .
Now run the scans ......starting with your AV , then Ad-aware SE , then Spybot  and finally CCleaner .

Remove anything it finds and then reboot back into normal mode and see how things are .
Running these scans will take a while ....so be patient .

When the scanning is complete .......turn the system restore back on .

Let us know how things are .

You've got some adware problems. Look here:

          http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/ccapp/

You also seem to have Norton products which suck up system resources on a good day. What all do you have running there?

            Look harder.

            August 16
            Process Explorer v9.25
Process Explorer v9.2 shows a real-time CPU graph in its tray icon, adds CPU graph and I/O delta columns to the process view, reports 32-bit loaded DLLs for 32-bit processes on Windows 64-bit systems, and lets you view and edit process security descriptors. It also supports Windows Vista.

Check the menu entry to see if there is an uninstaller.
Check Add/Remove Programs to see if there is a remove option.
Check msconfig to see if you can stop it from starting.
Download & run Hijackthis to stop it from starting.
Search your computer for the .exe file & then delete it from safe mode or with KillBox.
Run a registry cleaner to tidy up.

                  AOL = AO *censored*.

                  Try using something else.
