    Very Urgent Help Needed
    « on: November 09, 2005, 03:23:31 PM »
Yet again my computer gives me problems, even though this time the problem is MUCH MUCH worse.

I turned on my computer today, logged onto my XP account, and then as the computer was starting-up I got a black screen with the following message:

    Quote
A problem has been detected and windoes has been shut down to prevent damage.
If this is the first time you have seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing the video adapters. Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode.... (goes on to explain how to go into safe mode).....

    Technical information: Stop: 0x0000008e (0xc0000005, 0xFAPP1DEC, 0xF8501938, 0x00000000) FLINT. SYS address FADD1DEC base at FED1000, datestamp 433,1870

All physical memory has been deleted.

After restarting, AVG notified me that my AIM had a virus. Something along the lines of AIM/UNINSTALL.EXE virus which was then removed.

I am extremely worried about the aforementioned events, if anyone can help please do so.

If you can contact me on AIM or MSN they are:

    Thank you in advanced

I would go first to Trend Online Micro (www.trendmicro.com) and do a free online scan. Then download the latest AVG files,go to safe mode and do your scan. Delete anything that remains of the virus. If it can't be deleted at least get the name.

      Turn off system restore .
Run another full scan with AVG ........ If it comes up clean .......reboot back into normal mode ........Is the error message still there ?  If it isn't ..turn system restore back on .

      let us know

If you don't know the answer, it isn't a dumb question.

GX1_Man: I HAVE the latest AVG files. I have ewido and AVG both up-to-date and both were run yesterday and nothing was found.

dl65: Well my machine started up ok after I restarted it. I have turned off system restore, as someone told me in a thread to do so when cleaning my computer.
Another computer hope expert in another thread gave me the link.

Should I turn system restore back on? Should I run AVG in Safe mode WITH system restore off/on? Should I turn system restore on in safe mode?

        What should I do?

Armando........  IF ....you suspect that your pc may have been comprimised by a trojan or virus.......its a good idea to turn off your "system restore" this deletes all restore info and if the pests were hiding in there ...they will be flushed as well . Now with system restore off ......run the scan and if clean ...... you may safely turn system restore back on ........

          OFF.

YES or you can wait until you have rebooted back into normal mode .

Ok, so if I understood you correctly, I will leave system restore off, reboot into safe mode, run AVG, turn system restore ON, then reboot into regular mode?

Maybe yes or no. Download the updates first. Plan on working offline. You don't really need internet once you get there.

I think you should consider protecting your computer against the nasties.  :)

PS: You mean like actually purchase something like a firewall or anti-virus?
