Any Fellow Guru's Out there?  Heres a hard one
« on: November 18, 2005, 01:51:49 PM »

I am a computer tech myself, but for the life of me I cannot fix this machine.  Here is what I have done so far.  Let me know if you have any ideas

Machine is running extremely slow.  I have run multiple Diagnostics on it and the CPU is running at about 10% of what it should be in Windows.

Here are the troubleshooting steps I have taken so far

Spyware - Ad-aware, Spybot, Trend Micro

Virus Scan - Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition, AVG Anti-Virus, Trend Micro

Registry  - Checked hKey_Cur_usr  ---> Run, Checked Hkey_Local_Mach --> Run

[b}Services[/b] - Removed/Set to manual any unnecessary services.  It is possible I may need to disable another, but I doubt thats the problem.  If you have a better understanding of Windows Services let me know and I Will send you a list

Check Device Manager - Uninstalled any devices with !!!  on them.  Saw a few I didn't know.  Will also send a list if requested

Ran System File Checker - SFC /scannow

Replaced motherboard, CPU, RAM

I kinda don't know what else to do.  I cannot run System Restore as I do not have the time to track down all my software.    I have run a CPU benchmark from a Bootable CD and it show at the correct speed.

Please let me know if you have any ideas

    cademichaels.....How old is this pc ?
    What O/S is it running ?
    What does it have for a processor ?
    How much Ram does it have ?
    What's the speed of the hard drives ?
    How many running processes are there ?
    Have you run any sort of registry cleaner ?
    Have you run a hijackthis scan ?
    Does it display any error messages ?
    Quote
    I cannot run System Restore
    why would you require software to run system restore......or doesnt the O/S have that capability ?
    Have you run some trojan locator such as Ewido ?

    let us know

              I meant the full Destructive System Restore from the Restore Disks.  I don't have all the programs I have installed to restore them.  Nor the time to take on a project such as that

              Running it now.  Been taking all day.  Intense.  Found 200 things so far but I think they are all registry keys.  I am curious why this app found them but the 7 apps before did not.  I run a pretty tight ship

                Thats not surpising.........What I suspect we're dealing with is the aftermath of various trojans ....they have the habit of making registry changes and the other apps you ran simply aren't able to find them ........If you haven't already done so I would suggest shutting down the system restore feature in win XP .....and then run your scans again........bugs just love to hide in the system restore files .......when your finished the scan turn system restore back on ......

                Nope.  Turns out I was right.  No Tojans, just about 3 reg keys for spyware and about 300 cookies.  No actual files (other then the cookies)

                Like i said.  I run a tight ship.  Any more ideas?

                Another possible bit of information is I am monitoring my CPU Temp and when i first boot Windows its at about 60 Degrees Celcious.  But after windows is done loading its at a steady 33-37 degrees.  Nothing I do causes it to get hotter.  I ran a Mersenne Prime Calculation which should cook my processor, however it stays at 35 degrees.  I am wondering if maybe one of the drivers or services loading with windows is somehow limiting my CPU speed.  All the Benchmarking software I use says I seem to be running on battery however not only am I plugged in, I set the processor to "FULL SPEED ONLY" in the bios instead of dynamic
