getting rid of old XP laptop

What is the best and safest way of getting rid of my old XP laptop.  Thank you

Take the hard drive out or use http://www.dban.org/ to securely erase it.  Then see if the laptop is worth anything to sell, if not, take a look at charities that may take it.

I keep all my HDD's when i sell/recycle any PC's...think i have around 45 or so...

I would suggest retaining or physically destroying the hard drive myself. All drives I have that are failed or decommissioned I physically destroy or retain as a drive that has data backed up to it that can be installed and spun up to get data off of if ever needed.
