Constant barrage for updates?

I get lots of mail with offers to update my drivers. These confuse me.
As someone dedicated to making 'old' hardware and software work, I ask myself: Do I need to constantly update the drivers on my machine?
I dimly perceive the necessity for correct hardware drivers, but do they need constant updates??

No.

1) NEVER use 3rd party software to update drivers
2) Drivers should only be updated if / when there is a specific need or reason to do so (ie, to address compatibility issues or new features offered that you need)
