Back arrow doesn't work

All of a sudden, we are unable to use the backup arrow when we go to a website.  It grays out.  Also, the history menu doesn't usually come up.  It just shows whatever the page is that is open.  No matter which view you click - by site, date, order visited, etc., the drop-down is blank.
I have my internet options set to keep history for 3 days, so that's not it.
Any suggestions
