    driver for printer
    « on: May 05, 2017, 12:13:04 PM »
I have an older Brother laser printer HL-1430 that worked well with Vista but I cannot get it to work with windows 8.1 that I have on my new computer. I've tried Brother support, they just tell me that driver update is now from Windows update. but that does'nt  work.I was happy with that printer so if anybody has a workable solution please tell me.

    Brother laser printer HL-1430
    Look here:
    http://support.brother.com/g/b/oslist.aspx?c=gb&lang=en&prod=hl1430_eu
The above says Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 are supported.
    ...and links to this:
    http://support.brother.com/g/b/faqend.aspx?c=gb&lang=en&prod=hl1430_eu&faqid=faq00002994_001
    ...which says:

The built-in drivers support the basic functions of your Brother machine.
Scanning, PC-FAX and ControlCenter may not be available depending on your Brother machine, method of connection and Windows® version.
So, did you do as they said?
    What. exactly, did  you try?

      Please detail your answers.
Are you using USB to connect to the printer?
Can you verify the USB cable works?
Have you ever installed any printer on this system?
Do you have another printer available?

      I tried installing new printer.
Did Windows not find your printer?
Did Windows offer to locate a driver?
If so, did Windows say it cannot install this device?
Did you select a generic printer?
The brother printer can emulate an older HP printer, Did you try that?
      The HP LaserJet mode

Your machine has the following emulation modes. You can change the setting by using the control panel or a web browser.
      •  HP LaserJet Mode
The HP LaserJet mode (or HP mode) is the emulation mode in which this printer supports the PCL6 language of a Hewlett-Packard® LaserJet laser printer. Many applications support this type of laser printer. Using this mode will allow your printer to run at its best with those applications.

      I tried download new updates.
      From who? How?
      I tried repair printer.
Is hare a repair printer option?
How does one try to repair something that is not there?

      nothing works.
If you turn off the printer, does the Windows system make a noise?
Does Windows assign you a dealt printer?

Does the Brother printer do a self test?

"Can't Get it to work" isn't very descriptive.

Do you receive errors when you try to priint to it? Does the Printer not even appear? Does trying to print simply put iti in the queue and never print anything? etc.

something happened! Geek9pm sent a link to Brother support which I followed ( remove device, shut down remove power and then plug in and install device) and then device installed "almost.! The green bar went about one tenth of completion and stopped. It has not moved for 4 hours. at one point I noticed that the clock in the right corner of the process bar was 10 hours wrong so I set it right could that have something to do with it. I mean can it interfere with updating perhaps?

I think he means busted altogether, not out of support. Hanging or getting stuck while trying to interface with the device for a driver install certainly could be caused by outright hardware failure with the device.

I am inclined to agree  with BC_Programmer.
He could borrow a laptop from a fried and see if the Brother printer will install on the guest laptop. If it fails, that would be resewn to believe the printer has failed.

I just did that. Connected the printer to another desktop this time with windows 10. configured at once and printed testpage.no problem. It seems to be the os on my machine that is the problem.
So do I just reinstall windows 8.1 or is there an easier solution.

            Two things to try.
            1. Create a new user account with privileges and log into that and try.
            and/ or :
            2. Boot the 8.1 install media and ask for a repair of the system.
