Why, Really, Does Micosft Want The ARM chip?
« on: May 24, 2017, 07:27:44 PM »
Cost? Low power? Maybe. Maybe not.
As most already know, Microsoft says soon they will have a Surface Pro that does not use a chip from  Intel. Nor from AMD, the only other choice for a x86 device.

[MS claims they have an x86 emulator running at almost at native speed.]

Cost? Power? Already some makers have low-cost low-power tablets with features like the Surface pro. They use an Intel Atom CPU. So maybe cost and power are not the big reasons. What do you think?

Maybe Microsoft wants to divorce Intel?
It has been a long marriage.   ::)
What do you say?

Surface and Surface 2 used ARM chips, but Surface 3, and Surface 4 are Intel i3/i5/i7, same as the Surface Pro which has not had an ARM release. the upcoming Microsoft Surface has no planned ARM release either. If they said they would do an ARM release of a Pro model, I can't seem to find it anywhere.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

It will be in stores late this year.

You are right.
I am wrong.

I apologize for making such a very incorrect  statement.

The picture of the tablet above is not  a Surface Pro. It is a Qualcomm tablet.
Qualcomm makes a chip based o a ARM design. It runs Windows 10.
My bad.   :-[

When the company announced its Snapdragon-for-Windows-10 plans in December 2016, the company said “The first devices running the full Windows 10 experience based on Snapdragon processors are expected to be commercially available in the second half of 2017.”
But in last week's Q2 2017 earnings call, CEO Steve Mollenkopf said “Our Snapdragon 835 is expanding into Mobile PC designs running Windows 10, which are scheduled to launch in the fourth calendar quarter this year.”

Which is why i stated nonsense in your original Post...

Other manuf. are using Win products in production of surface like products...

Bottom line...MS still wins.
