      jedimaster,
      Short answer. Nothing will happen.
The current HDMI standard is as good or better tarn USB 3 and the later is just now shewing up on some consumer devices.
Upgrading any standard is no promise that better things will soon come. The current state of TV sets and monitors goes up the 4 K standard.
There is no real resin to need frame rates more than 30 frames per second on any entertainment device. Any flicker can be reduced by other means. That has already been done long ago.So there is no compelling resewn for makers of graphics cards to produce a new mode that would go beyond the current HDMI  standard.

To make an analogy consider this.
At the INDY 500 race track they have new amazing engine designs with very high horsepower.

No then, if you want to see on of these cars, you have to go to the race track. You will never see on at your local car dealer.  :)

        Not going to happen.
Microsoft and others are doing the whole Virtual Reality thing. The new spec for HDMI has nothing to add. Read this:
        https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/hololens
No video card upgrade  can do this. It is wholly different from whatever you have ever done with any electronic device. It is more like having a vivid dream.

This will happen. It is more than  just something for game play. It is for almost any application where people need visual information away from a computer desk.

Just a few areas where is is needed:
        Medical research.
         Crime lab.
         Mechanical engineering.
         Warehouse  inventory
         Aviation
         Weather forecasting

... and the list goes on.     8)

Any "Input lag" problems you have are absolutely unrelated to HDMI 2.1. That's like saying your car moves slowly because you don't have the right brand of windscreen.

Give it a break. Nobody here knows any more than you do. We'll all find out at the same time.

The specification itself doesn't say anything about reducing input latency. It is the journalist interpretations of it that do that, based on trying to explain VRR.

Most Input latency is in the application, not the time between frames. VRR only "reduces latency" in the sense that a Variable Refresh Rate means that a new image can be displayed before the next screen refresh without tearing. But in cases where that is useful it is largely going to be due to the desired Framerate the application is pushing being below a standard Refresh Rate, so it's largely just going to eliminate screen tearing, the absolute time difference from one frame of input to the next is going to actually be greater, and none of this has anything to do which how quickly the software receives input.
