aaronme2..... A heatsink is a device which sits directly on top of the cpu and its purposed is to draw heat off the processor.....and usually there is a fan mounted on the heat sink to add to the cooling ....in fact , if the fan fails or the pc is powered up with out it ..........the cpu may be damaged .....( the good news is that there should also be a high temp sensor on the cpu which would cause it to be shutdown if overtemp is sensed .)
Typically , heat sinks are made from cast aluminum or copper .

uhhhhhhhhhh thats noooooooooooot good. no. see i guess what i have been reffering to as a 'fan' is a heatsink. i took the heatsink off and put it on the video card, and turned the computer off,a nd it auto shut downed on me. anywasy the 3 beeps mean 64k ram failure or sumthin. so when i have no memvcards in i ddont; get that but i don;t get much of anythig nelse either, as in no video. and now my mobo is rejecting its original mem cards so i'm pretty much screwed.

aaronme2Is the video card ...on board ( built into the mobo ) or is it a separate plug in card ?

Have you tried to very carefully replace just one stick of ram in the slot closest to the cpu ....ensure the fastening clips have snapped ito place ....then power up and see what happens ...listen for beep code ....

aaronme2........ ok .....whenever you remove the heatsink, you should always check to be sure that there is sufficient thermal paste between the cpu and the heat sink........Doesnt your heat sink have a cooling fan mounted on it ?

aaronme2.......  Did you try it with just one stick of ram ?
and 10 beeps indicate a cmos issue .
Did you make any changes in there ?

CMOS....... complementary metal oxide semiconductor. Pronounced see-moss.

A part of the motherboard that maintains system variables in static RAM. It also supplies a real-time clock that keeps track of the date, day and time. CMOS Setup is typically accessible by entering a specific sequence of keystrokes during the POST at system start-up.

When you start up the pc ....right at the beginning and before you see the operating system begin to load ....you may have noticed screens appearing with varios bits of info ..... usually down at the bottom you will see for example ....... press DEL to enter setup or something similar .
