Hello! I am very glad I found you guys yesterday. I was attacked by a bad virus which changed a lot of things in my laptop. After getting rid of it, I could no longer go online. My wifi was gone. I called the tech support of the phone company which gives the internet service since the computer could not find their server and after two guys took care of me it was concluded that the language which told the computer to look for the network was corrupted. We deleted the network and created it again. Now the only way I can go online is by hooking a LAN cable to the back of our modem, the laptop does not recognize it has any WiFi, and it even says that it has no network. It lack any other mode of connectivity that I can rig. I wonder if I should get a small USB router and attach it to the thing. I NEED the internet, I use it ever day.
I ran antivirus software after talking to the phone company tech and it said I had nothing, still the machine won't work properly. I would have posted in the Networking section but since all of this was cause by a virus, i thought I'd post here instead. I don't know if the virus corrupted something that has to do with the Wifi that the laptop does not recognize the regular way of going online. I tried to update the wifi drivers, but the machine said i had the current drivers and that they were working properly. At this point, I doubt everything, because the thing is not working the way it should. I do not feel confident enough for self-help. I tried to follow the preliminary steps so that you guys could have the information needed to tell me what to do, not all of them worked.
Can anybody help me? Thank you so very much!

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

    1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
    2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
    3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
    4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
    5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
    6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
    7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.
    *************************************************************************
Your AV is disabled. Enable it please. Also enable Windows Defender. You can uninstall Spybot. It is obsolete.
First of all, I would like to know how you cleaned your computer. Are you certain that your internet switch is not turned off on that laptop.
Please run this scan with the internet connection disconnected from the laptop.

Please download MiniToolBox to Desktop and run it.

Hi, thank you for trying to help me. Well, I had a virus because my antivirus told me. I cleaned it up using it. I also downloaded ADW Cleaner and it found something else and took it out. I downloaded MalwareBytes Premium Trial and it quarantined something else. Then it told me I was clean. But the wifi connection is still not working. My laptop does not have a physical switch, so I must see if I can turn it on with keystrokes. I do not know how to to do that, so I am going to search online for the steps. I downloaded the software you said and this time it took, the first time, it got blocked for some reason, perhaps after all the cleanup I have done...sometimes viruses do not allow you to download stuff that would kill them. I will follow the steps you gave me.
        Thanks again.

The switch is in your F keys. Check with the site of your laptop to find out which one. If you can't download the scanner try it in Safe Mode with NetWorking.

I will try to follow your instructions. I have been trying the F keyws together with the FN key and it has not worked. Is it the one with an airplane on it (my F12 key)?

Is it the one with an airplane on it (my F12 key)?
You should check with HP to determine which key it is. This is your main problem.

Hi Dave, I did the "reset.bat" and also was finally able to find my laptop's model number, but have not been able to find out what function key turns the wireless on. I have no keys with a wireless icon.
            windows mobility center
says that my wireless is off
but the button that says turn wireless on is grayed out and I cannot click it.
do I need to go into the bios? I am afraid to do that!
The only way I can go online is using an Ethernet cable from the laptop to the back of the modem.

Using HP Assistant to try to turn my wireless on
            I just got
            wired LAN
local area connection (that one had a check mark that it was on)

            Wireless LAN
            Not connected
            Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 3160

            Wireless LAN
            Not connected
            Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter

            Wireless LAN
            Not Connected
Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter #2

I went to HP's site but could not find out what the keystrokes needed to turn the wireless back on, I've been searching on the internet, using my laptop models and have seen a lot of stuff, but none of the keys suggested has worked for me.
The machine keeps insisting that my drivers are up to date.

Can you give me an idea?

Thank you so very much!  :(

I found an HP Pavilion Users Manual online and it said that the wireless switch was the F9 key. I tried it as fn + f9 and it didn't work, and I tried it as f9 alone and it didn't work. What next?

What is the model number of your laptop? Please go into Device Manager and see if there are any yellow or red icons.

Here is the instructions for that model of laptop. Look it over and compare it to your laptop to see if you can find the internet switch. I'll also do some looking.

I looked over the instructions and it doesn't explain the function of each of the F keys except for the mute key. I suspect that the internet switch is to the left of the mute key but it is probably a combination of FN plus the function key. You could also try running the HP diagnostics explained in the instructions.

I will try, Dave and I will report to you what happens. I downloaded the manual and will text the key left of the mute key with FN.

                  Thank you so much!

I tried the key to the left of the mute key alone and it didn't do anything. i tried it with the FN key and it didn't do anything. I am still having to use the LAN cable. I know that some people can go into the bios and fix the problem there but i don't know how to to do that. Any ideas?

                    Thank you!

In Section 7 of the manual there is something called HP PC Hardware Diagnostic. You could try that to see if it helps.
