Zip utilities and HD lifespan
« on: July 02, 2017, 06:34:25 PM »
I have a portable HD that I do my backups on. Is there any indication that zip utilities such as 7-zip and PeaZip (I use this one) have an effect on a drives lifespan? Can they make a portable HD life shorter?

No to both questions. External Hard Drive longevity is not affected by the actual file types you store on the drive. Even if you zip files directly on the drive the drive's life isn't going to be affected in any way that could be reliably measured.

Only in the sense that zipping utilities cause additional read/writes during compression/decompression of files.  Regardless, it is insignificant in regards to the longevity of the drive.

Even with your temp folder on an SSD there is no need to worry.

The major causes of HDD failure are:]
Defect in manufacteure.
High temoperature.
Very high G force.
There is no clear evidence that frequent reads and writes shrten the life.
Do you need references?
