Blue Screen - Looks like some USB related driver issue
    « on: July 19, 2017, 07:29:01 PM »
Moments earlier I connected an old external HDD to get some files from it. Initially the HDD emitted some funny fast beeping sounds. I thought it was not properly connected so I removed it and reconnected it. Then it works like normal. After I'm done and try to eject the HDD, I got a prompt saying that it was in use. So I shut down my computer, removed the HDD, and restarted my computer. It loads all the way to the desktop being shown and started to load some background startup programs, then I get this blue screen as attached below.

I can boot into Safe Mode. I did a quick google and it seems to be a driver issue, probably caused by the external HDD earlier. Microsoft has a hotfix for this, but it can't be executed from Safe Mode.

    How can I fix this?

    Thank you.

      Hi Geek,

I can view the attached image with no issue.

      Anyway, the Technical information is:

      SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION

      *** STOP: 0x0000003B (0x00000000C0000005, 0xFFFFF960000D9488, 0xFFFFF88007CA7FB0, 0x0000000000000000)

      ***  win32k.sys - Address FFFFF9600000D9488 base at FFFFF960000C0000, DateStamp 4ce79a73

Once a while there will be different error code like 0x00000019 or 0x00000050.

      My eyesight is poor.  8)
      Check this out:

The above is specific to Windows 7 64 bit.
Other articles refer to Windows 10, but you want to focus on the Windows 7 64 bit posts found on the micros ft support forum.

This error is most likely from a driver, but that raises the question - Did you recently install a new driver? Do you think the US connection to the external HDD has some role in this?
However, error messages are sometimes way off and not even near the real case. Was there anything at all that has changed recently?   Third-party software? Very old software?  Any chance you might have inadvertently installed a 32 bit driver?

That is as much as I can think of.  Perhaps somebody else will come in.   :)

        Hi Geek,

It is an 241.08 kB, 1334x750 image. I wonder if you forgot your glasses? Just kidding ^^

No I did not install any new driver or hardware - but the system may do so when I first connect the old ext hdd, which I suspect was screwed up when I unplugged it and reconnect.

The computer was working fine all the way up until I restart (in order to remove the ext HDD).

Now that you have the HDD off he system, do you ever get the B SOD again?
What kind of I/O adapter did you  use for the external hard drive?
Did the external HDD have any auto-run programs on it?

The BSOD happens after the ext HDD is removed. The ext HDD was connected with a standard USB 3.0 Type A to USB 3.0 Micro-B 10 Pin cable.

I'm not sure if the ext HDD has any auto-run program.

Anyway, I follow the instruction from the link you provided. I execute a Clean Boot and apply the hotfixes I downloaded from Microsoft earlier. However, the hotfix for error 0x0000003B is not applicable, while hotfix for 0x00000019 is successfully applied.

Following further instruction from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796, I am able to find out the particular process that causes the error 0x00000019, which is a startup process called iCloudServices.exe.

At this point, the error 0x0000003B miraculously gone. Leaving only 0x00000019.

Just when I thought the iCloud process is the culprit, something else is complicating the situation. When I launch certain programs, namely CorelDraw & Photoshop, the same BSOD happens with the error code 0x00000019. I'm yet to test on all other program, but at least MS Office programs are fine, Google Chrome is fine. I'm not sure what particular process is executed when CorelDraw and Photoshop is running that cause 0x00000019.

Btw the technical information for the error is:

          BAD_POOL_HEADER

          ***  STOP: 0x00000019 (0x0000000000000020, 0xFFFFF900C292E000, 0xFFFFF900C292E6E0, 0x00000000256E0000)
