Can I use AOl mail with local client software?
« on: November 23, 2017, 08:24:30 AM »
I have an AOL e-mail. Had it for years.
Up until just now, I could get my mail by either going to the AOL web site, or just downloading the mail in Thunderbird. Now only the web site works.
My Thunderbird is up to date and works with other services, like Hotmail.

I read a recent article about how to set up POP3 for AOL. Tried it in Thunderbird and it fails. For some reason Thunderbird can not use the port  995.

Not really very important. Just would like to know.  :)

There's more than 1 Port choice...

After spending over three hours on this, I think I will have to give up on AOL mail.
Too bad. But not a big loss.

It seems AOL no longer allows auto forward of AOL mail to another email service. But I have no way to prove this.
This link claims it still works.

AOL is an online platform that features an email service called AOL Mail. One of the features of AOL Mail is its ability to automatically forward all incoming email messages to another email address. You can set this mail forwarding feature through AOL Mail's general settings menu. Once you have setup email forwarding, you will continue to receive emails in your AOL Mail inbox.
I did it the way he said. No improvement.

A week ago Thunderbird had no trouble getting AOL mail. Methinks AOL has pulled the plug on the e-mail forward thing  >:(

EDIT: Found it!  ;D

Alto made its debut back in October 2012, when AOL previewed it to users as a smarter inbox for a range of email services, with an interface designed to help you manage your messages better. In 2015, it evolved into a modern mobile app that mimicked Google’s Inbox in some ways.

I quite liked Alto when I tested it two years ago – the UI was fresh and intuitive, and included a neat Stacks feature to help you group and triage similar messages at once. It also surfaced important information from your emails, like shipping dates and updates on your air travel itinerary.

Yes, in fact that is how I had AOL setup with Thunderbird from some time ago.

Like I said, things weer working fine about a week ago.
I have tried two other mail clients.
I will leave a bookmark on my browser and check AOL once in awhile to see if anybody is looking for me. But I doubt it.

Thunderbird can not use the port  995.
This reference is not oriented toward AOL mail but it does indicate the Thunderbird does recognize port 995 when properly configured for some email accounts: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thunderbird-and-hotmail

Edit, just for fun: Does Using an AOL Email Address Suggest You're a Tech Dinosaur?

using an AOL email address has long been seen as a way of signaling that you're stuck in the 1990s.

I go back before the 1980s.
I once had a CompuServe account.

I once had a CompuServe account.
Me, too, naturally, since I live near Columbus, the birthplace of CompuServe.   ;D
