    AOL Secure Connection Failed
    « on: December 05, 2017, 05:05:08 AM »
    Hi -

Yesterday I could not access my AOL email account  = "Secure connection failed"  - also a popup message from Avast AV " Threat secured" - "infected with HTML:Phishing- VJ[Phish]" "connection aborted".  No instruction or advice given about how to correct things.  I've tried to sign in to AOL as usual, but their website does not recognise my user name or password, and so I've no email.  Firefox is my main browser, but I get the same result via IE and MS Edge.  I am stumped as to what to do next - any help or advice will be appreciated.

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

    1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
    2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
    3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
    4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
    5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
    6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
    7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

Dave - thanks for your help.
I downloaded AdwCleaner, but before I could do anything another Avast popup appeared -  "Threat secured. We've moved the threat AdwCleaner.exe to your virus chest" - No AdwCleaner icon anywhere and I presume that means that Avast is blocking things. The small window in the address bar showing download progress shows download failed.  Shall I try again from the start?  (As well as Avast I have Malwarebytes free program and I ran scans on both when the problem first started, both ok)

Avast should not block AdwCleaner. Try running the scans in Safe Mode.

Windows 10 safe mode - Malwarebytes scan all ok, Avast scan = "UI failed to load.  AV service is not responding."

Just a thought - further to last post - would it hurt if I tried uninstall/reinstall Avast AV?  Then download AdwCleaner again.

Avast un/reinstall now ok.  Downloaded AdwCleaner ok, but it opened up not in Desktop but in a window with actions options "scan" and "logfiles"  - I clicked scan which it proceeded to do and results shown in Notepad.  This scan showed all ok with no malicious items found.  I hope I have not somehow messed up the AdwCleaner download - nothing like your screenshots has appeared.  Also I've resolved my original problem (no email access) with a phone call to AOL and reset password.  Let me know if it's worth carrying on - I seem to be all right now.

The original problem was no access to email so if everything else is working well I would consider it repaired.

Sorry Dave - I seem to have spoken too soon - this morning the same thing happened that I described in my original post.  I can now not access any AOL page so my efforts   with AOL password seem to have been in vain.  I have again downloaded AdwCleaner 7.0.5.0 from your link with the same result (my post 6 Dec) - there is nowhere an option to open in Desktop with an icon and that is why I was not sure things were right with the download.  The AdwCleaner page just does not look right to me.  Hope I'm not wasting your time.

Again, further to my post today - I have just run CCleaner and afterwards checked AOL to see if it made any difference -- of course, just to complicate things, AOL came through perfectly ok. email access as well.  I feel a bit of a fool to have to report that, at the moment, things are ok again.

Ok. Keep an eye on how it works for the next few days to see if it happens again.
