Havent used that since the Windows 98 SE days on a Celeron 700Mhz. Thinking I got it bundled with my CD Burner. When I moved to XP I used other media players like Windows Media Player and later iTunes.

I still use Winamp 5.623 as my Music Player on my PCs and laptops, and have for a number of years. I gave up trying to replace it. As good as programs like Foobar2000, VLC,  MediaMonkey, MusicBee, and so on are, they just can't replace it for me because of the wealth of Input plugins I use. (Native Game System formats)

it used to be my go to media player, and although I can't remember why now, I moved over to VLC many years ago and haven't looked back.

Anybody can make one player the audio player and another the video.
I have Windham as the audio, VSC for the video.   :D
And I do not let Windows media player do anything.  >:(

Here are five alternatives to Windows Media Player

VLC media player. Hands-down one of the best multi-format media players out there, VLC supports a wide range of file formats. ...
UMPlayer. UMPlayer is based on another solid multimedia player, MPlayer. ...
        KMPlayer. ...
        PotPlayer. ...
        SPlayer.

    Also worth mention:
     Foobar2000 (Windows)
     Media Monkey Free (Windows)
     MusicBee (Windows)

For Video I use Media Player Classic, VLC, and KMPlayer. I've found some files don't play properly with one or the other. Sometimes I even need to resort to Windows Media Player for some reason.

VLC is the only software I've found- other than paid, commercial products- that can be made capable of playing Blu-Ray Discs.

      It really whipped the llama's...

Interesting side note, a developer named Jordan Eldredge has recreated WinAmp 2 in the browser using HTML5 and JavaScript.
