    Corrupted webio.dll
    « on: February 04, 2018, 02:30:58 AM »
My laptop can't go online (despite connected) and can't launch Google Chrome browser with the error message:

"C:\windows\system32\webio.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support."

I run the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) but it was not repaired:

"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Details are included in the CBS.Log %WinDir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log."

I tried to replace the webio.dll from another computer but it said I need permission to replace the file.

I'm logged in with the only user account on the laptop. As I checked from User Accounts, it's an Administrator.

Are you running Win7 or Vista? You didn't state that in your first post. Anyways, do you have a Win7 or Vista CD depending on operating system to reinstall webio.dll?

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium. It is an old laptop and I don't have the CD anymore.

Tough luck. Are there any sources you know about that are reputable to redownload it? I suggest looking on Microsofts website and and your computer manufactures website. Not any of the other sites, unless abseloutely necessasary.

          Download the webio.dll?

From what I have came across so far, Microsoft doesn't seem to offer that as a solution.

More tough luck. Have you tried reinstalling the driver for whatever networking device you are using if you are using one?

            I would run sfc /scannow 3 or 4 times...re-booting after each.

Patio, I've run sfc/ scannow for no less than 10 times, with the same result.

I didn't restart after each run though. I'll try if that makes any difference.

Sorry - should have seen that. Do you by any chance have a restore point or, preferably, disc image from a time before the problem arose?

If not, try replacing the file in SAFE MODE.

Have you tried reinstalling the driver for whatever networking device you are using if you are using one?

The laptop was connected to wireless network all the time. So, I check the Dell website (the laptop is a Dell Inspiron 13) but there is only BIOS driver available for download. I found another driver by the adapter name Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card, but during installation, it says no compatible hardware is found.

                I would run sfc /scannow 3 or 4 times...re-booting after each.

I've run another 3 times in normal mode, and another 3 times in safe mode, restarting each time, still same result.

Sorry - should have seen that. Do you by any chance have a restore point or, preferably, disc image from a time before the problem arose? If not, try replacing the file in SAFE MODE.

System Restore was turned off before this, so no restore point, no disk image.

Replacing the file in Safe Mode still prompt for administrator permission.

Did you use safe mode with networking?
