Do I need Windows 7 SP-1? Why?
« on: April 19, 2018, 04:06:37 PM »
While using Windows 7 home  32 bit and I go a message that says I need the SP-1 update.
Well, I goofed around, did not get it and later shut down the PC.

Now I trun the PC back on and go into windows 7. It is stall the same. No SP-1, but no the message does not show up. What does that mean? Why doesn't the message show up again? I ask for updates and it says nothing about SP-1.

I am confused.  ???
Either I have it or not.   8)
If not, why will it not recommend it?  :-\

Once you have SP1 installed you might see about 260 or so more updates. Not sure if your system has already prompted you yet or already ran all those after SP1.

Brief review.
I had to install my Windows 7 Home again on this Dell 755 desktop. After it was installed, I got lots of updates, about 190 or more.

Now yesterday I go a message that I need SP1. I did not have SP-1 then. I started to  update to SP-1, but was it did not work. So I think.
Now today, after reading Patio's remark, I checked again and it says I have it.

Oh well, If it works, I am OK.

Did you install any drivers or software prior to the failure that could be the cause other than Windows 7 SP1?

Is the hardware healthy? ( I think I heard about you having issues with this same Dell 755 system in the past where it will all of a sudden have a severe problem requiring an OS repair or reinstallation )

*Note: If there was an issue with SP1 or updates after that, the problem should show up right away or upon the next boot of the system when file(s) altered during the update process used during boot are critical. So if no updates and then all of a sudden you have a crashed computer you then have to look at hardware failure of some kind or what you did last that nuked the windows install.

Thanks DaveLembke,
The photo software I like is very old and sometimes does not install right.
I will check that out. Meanwhile I am making more restore points just in case. Today I got more updates to install and I have been holding off letting them do what they have to do.
So here I go again!   ;D

I installed it about a week ago. I twas working fine.
After doing SP-1 there were even more updates after that. Over 200.
Then after that, I installed a old version of Paint Shop that I have used before. Everything looked good, I shut it down to something. Later, I restarted the machine and something went wrong. It tried to do automatic startup repair, but failed. It could not find the restore point.
That is what I call a blowout. 8)

Now it's Saturday afternoon and I am on Windows 7 again. This time the SP-1 is in place and  working good. Now I am going to try something. Again, I will install my  old Pa nit Shop Pro version and see what happens.  ;D

Spoke too soon.
Re set the PC and Windows 7 did 195 updates.
This is enough to drive me back to Prozac.  :'(
How can it have 195 updates after doing SP-1?
Anyway, it failed on the next boot up. It could not repair itself.
Now I am afraid to ever turn it off.  :(
Time for another backup.... check points don't work.   :-\

I have 3 HDD and all three pass sector tests.
Only Windows 7 complains so much. Windows 10 is being nice.
Yes, the old thing does have a know hardware flaw, but I don't see how that would corrupt the updates. Other downloads and installs seem to go well.
Now I have the updates turned off. Le's see how long Windows 7 can go without another massive update.

This hardware has two devices that do not have the right drivers.
But memory tests are OK.
CPU tests or OK
HDD tests are OK.
I can only guess that it must drive windows update crazy trying to find drivers for the devices and it stalls the update recess. That is a wild guess. Windows 10 just lets it be. I have no proof that the devices are the source of the problem.

Amway, as far as I can tell Windows 7 is stable without the updates. Unless Widows 7 can give me some specific details, I see no resewn to let it continue to install updates that will hang the system. I have lost count over how many times this has happened.
I am on Windows 7 now. I am also watching a movie on Amazon. No sign of any kind of troubles. I now have automatic updates turned off. And I just made an image using Maximum Reflect.  If there was any HDD issue, Maxim Reflect would choke and report a failure. (Which has happened in other scenario. In the case I fixed the HDD issue.)
Thank you for you help. The update things says I have 63 more updates to do.  Maybe in a few weeks I might try it avian just to see what happens.  :-\

What drivers are missing and why  ? ?
What tests are these you have run that say all is peachy ? ?
Especially the HDD tests ? ?

I use the mini tool partition wizard and it did a can on my Windows 7 partition and found no errors.

But.. I just now did a test I have never done before.
INTEL CPU Diagnostic Test.
It says my CPU fails the Brand Sharing Test.

What is that  ??? Why would it bother Windows 7?

Updaye:
I erased the partition.
I got an ISO of Windows 7 32 home from someplace.
Made a DVD, booted it and installed Windows 7 all over again.

But this time it came up as SP1.  This ISO is different than  the DVD I got from Microsoft years ago. Maybe it will not mos-behave like the original DVD  did.
Hope this is the solution.  :)
