On Home, You can set the startup type to "disabled" for the Windows Update Service in Services (Start->Run "Services.msc"). This will disable Windows Update altogether which means you cannot check for updates either- You'd have to turn it on again first.

    Only delays it all.

I've tried that and every tool and work-a-round that others claim to work!

Eventually, upon shutdown (Or even without shutting down) the pc goes into update mode and you can't do a thing about it.

Foolishly, I even unplugged the pc when this happened only to find the pc would update when restarted!

Disabling the Windows Update prevents it from checking or installing updates.

It doesn't prevent updates that have already been downloaded/installed from completing their updates when they require a reboot.
