Apple's Siri in the spotlight for potty mouth!
« on: April 30, 2018, 09:30:49 AM »
Apple's Siri in the spotlight for potty mouth.

On a Mac or iPhone, users can ask Siri to define the word "mother." Initially, it gives a standard definition:
-"a woman in relation to a child or children to whom she has given birth"
- "a female animal in relation to its offspring."
-"(especially as a title or form of address) the head of a female religious community."
...
Originally, Siri was delivering the surprising definition when it was asked "what does mother mean?" That query has since been fixed, but the issue still remains when it's asked to "define the word mother."
Siri is pulling the definition from the Oxford Dictionary, which offers the swear word as a secondary definition for the word "mother" in a somewhat colloquial response.

Siri says MoFo? I'd pay money to hear that!

You have to ask twice for it to kick in...

I shudder to think what she says if you ask three times. I have to admit that when I was first fooling around with test-to-speech in Windows, I made the robot lady say a lot of bad words.

My experiments with text-to-speech in Windows were with the "MSAgent" control in Visual Basic. I certainly didn't always use my powers for good.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

Text-to-speech ... I had fun calling my boss once and playing it as Stephen Hawking as for thats how the voice sounded in a text -to-speech program I had been using that sounded just slightly better than a Speak & Spell

Stephen Hawking passed away recently. He made use of Test to Speech while working as  a professor at Cambridge.  Here is a recent article by the Washington post.
How will we remember Stephen Hawking?
Quote
Despite his almost unbelievable conquest of his disabilities, Stephen Hawking should be remembered for at least four other reasons:
First, and many times with collaborators, for his seminal work on black holes, entropy and the radiation emitted from the black holes. Second, for his copious and popular writings of both nonfiction and fiction, making physics more interesting and understandable to the general public. Third, his heated and unsuccessful arguments with other physicists that the Higgs boson, if it existed, could never be found. (Incidentally, he was proved wrong in 2012.) Fourth and finally, his vitriolic attacks on Israel, motivated by his mentor Noam Chomsky, that included support of boycott, divestment and sanctions and questioning the need for a Jewish stat
For many people, Test to speech is very important tool. (Myself included.)  :)

postscript...
During his time at Cambridge Professor Hawking wrote a large number of publications. The best way to read the academic publications authored by Professor Hawking or his colleagues is by going to the SLAC SPIRES HEP site and searching for "Find author Hawking".
